A sacred holiday: Hanukkah commemorates Jewish military victory ...

Thick clouds hid the sun from view most of Saturday.

But that didn?t stop the Kluger boys from awaiting its departure.

By the time the sun set Saturday, the Hampden Twp. brothers were ready to join their parents in lighting their menorah and launching Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish holiday.

At 6 p.m., Max, 12; Benjamin, 10 and Ross, 6, and their parents, Lawrence and Dara Kluger, lit their brass menorah. Then, the Klugers ate latkes, opened gifts and played a dreidel game.

?Our boys love Hanukkah,? Dara Kluger said. ?Hanukkah teaches the boys that in life, the one who perseveres can win and the little guy can win.?

WHAT IS HANUKKAH?

Hanukkah commemorates the military victory of the ancient Jews, led by Judah Maccabee, over the army of the Greek-Syrians who had denied them religious freedom. This year, Hanukkah runs through Dec. 16.

When the temple in Jerusalem was reclaimed by the Jews, the Maccabees discovered only enough oil to light the giant menorah for one day. Instead, it lasted eight days. Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of that flame and the rededication of the temple.

HOW IS HANUKKAH CELEBRATED?

Jews observe the event by lighting candles on a menorah, one for each night, praying in Hebrew and enjoying food cooked in oil. Many families exchange gifts each night.

ARE THERE OTHER HANUKKAH CELEBRATIONS PLANNED?

The traditional state Hanukkah celebration will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the state Capitol East Wing rotunda. Sponsored by Chabad Lubavitch, this celebration will feature the lighting of the menorah, clowns, dreidel games and latkes.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, Silver Academy and the five area synagogues will hold a Hanukkah concert 11 a.m. Dec. 16 in the Jewish Community Center at 3301 N. Front St. Sheldon Low, who performs Jewish rock music across the United States, will be featured.
