BMW, Toyota Come Together for New EV/Hybrid Tech, Sports Cars

Not much is known about the latest partnership, but it aims to focus on lightweighting technology, powertrain electrification and a fuel cell system

BMW and Toyota are teaming up for an upcoming sports car as well as electric vehicle (EV) technology development.

Back in March, both automakers entered an agreement to develop next-generation lithium-ion batteries. They also agreed that BMW would supply 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre engines to Toyota Motor Europe in 2014. Now, the two have decided to join forces once again for other EV technology and a new sports vehicle.

"We aim to further strengthen our competitive position in sustainable future technologies," said Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the Board of Management for BMW. "We signed an MoU to this effect today. Toyota and the BMW Group share the same strategic vision of sustainable individual future mobility. Together we have a great opportunity to continue leading our industry through this transformation."

Not much is known about the latest partnership, but it aims to focus on lightweight technology, powertrain electrification, and a fuel cell system.

"BMW and Toyota both want to make ever-better cars," said Toyota. "We respect each other. And I think this is shown by our taking the next step only six months since the signing of our initial agreement. Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells. On the other hand, I believe BMW's strength is in developing sports cars. I am excited to think of the cars that will result from this relationship."

3 Common Twitter Mistakes by Real Estate Agents - WPMU.org

Real Estate Phrases - Search Columns on TweetDeck

TweetDeck Screenshot - Search Columns for Real Estate Phrases

1) Automating Tweets

I am very opposed to using services like City Blast which offer a syndication feed of property listings and real estate news. Everybody syndicates the same stuff and it often includes a link that takes the Follower off Twitter to another site. Ever think that maybe they don?t want to leave Twitter?

This is not a conversation it?s a broadcast which sounds like a broken record and people see through it. While having current news and listings is valuable, it has it?s time and place?. on a dedicated listings page really. Too many realtors think of social media as another advertising portal instead of a 2nd phone number to stay in touch with clients.

If you?re going to use a service like City Blast it should not represent more than 10% of your tweets or it will not look like it is coming from you. As a realtor I?m sure you can appreciate the power of ?word of mouth? and that?s really what social media is? the key difference is that everybody is watching. One needs to be careful of what they put out there because it may look like you don?t really care.

2) Not Searching Other Tweets

Now this is one of the rare exceptions where I encourage automation. I use a program called TweetDeck?(made by Twitter)?and there are many more like Hootsuite. It allows me to set automated search operations (search columns). I?ll create a search column for any Tweet that includes the words ?Bought First House? and ?Sold Our House?? you can come up with many more like ?Finally moved in? or ?My new condo?. If you load these all up you?ll start seeing a trend, you see emotions? you see real people celebrating or cursing the triumphs and woes of real estate.

If you look at my screenshot up top (TweetDeck Screenshot) ?you?ll see a number of tweets are worth re-tweeting ?RT? and when done with consistency can start inspiring people who follow you to make a move themselves. You should also follow all your clients and partners? comment on some of their tweets, ask them questions and RT their tweets. Imagine the vibe you could create on your profile if it was covered with RT from real people saying these things?

Make it your goal to involve someone who has their own Twitter account in all of your Tweets. Bet you can?t automate that now can you? Don?t fret, you can schedule your Tweets with TweetDeck so that you can do 5 or 6 of them quickly without actually blasting everyone with all of them in one shot. Remember to space them out if you?re going for inspirational quotes (RT phrases like the ones in my screenshot).

3) Not Taking Ownership

When I say ownership I mean pride, I mean confidence and comfort. Don?t be afraid to be yourself? show your Followers you are human, admit it you?ve had a long day? ask your followers to bring you up to speed on everything you?ve missed. Wondering if it?s raining across town? Tweet it? you?d be surprised at how fast you can get an answer.

Get a Twitter App on your mobile phone and enable email notifications within your Twitter Account settings so that you know when to login and respond to someone asap. Remember, 80% of social media is done on mobile phones sharing pictures and straight old fashioned talking. Ok old fashioned is dead, we now type with our telephones but you know what I mean.

Make Twitter your 2nd phone number, show interest in what others are talking about, voice your opinion and jump into the conversation? it?s one big party and everybody is welcome to it? that?s the beauty of social media. It?s now fast becoming the #1 way consumers complain about products and services.

You can take that as a blessing or a threat. If you ignore it? it?s most definitely a threat? but if you respond to it, you can turn it around in public view and that?s what people will never forget and keep talking about. Be a journalist, be a friend, be honest and above all be consistent. Happy Tweeting!

Both Hakiel and Bowie are from the Rochester area: Hakiel is from Webster, and Bowie is from Henrietta.

The Red Cross is?already providing assistance in Florida, and they had?eight shelter open?last night.

The Red Cross says that people can help by donating to its Disaster Relief. To help visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Contributions may also be sent to local American Red Cross chapters or to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013 or to your local chapter.

Beauty by Brueck: SKIN CANCER LINK TO CHILDHOOD ABUSE

As a plastic surgeon practicing in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, Florida, I must review a lot of medical literature. That led me to an article appearing in Archives of General Psychiatry quoting a?study saying people who experienced parental abuse or neglect as children were at a much higher risk of developing skin cancer when they face stressful moments in their lives.??

This was due to a decrease in their body?s immune response to skin cancers.??

The greater the immune response, the fewer incidents of skin cancer.? This clearly is an example of how early childhood neglect or abuse can effect one?s life in later years.

Google Earth 7.0 for Android brings new, super-detailed 3D maps for some cities (update: video)

Google Earth for Android gets new 3D maps for some cities

Here's a bit of a surprise that slipped under the radar during the Google I/O keynote: Google Earth for Android has been updated to 7.0 to take advantage of the new 3D map technology it unveiled at another special event just a few weeks ago. As a refresher, the visuals are automatically created from 45-degree aerial imagery and can pick up 3D elements as subtle as trees. Before you go racing to your hometown to see how it looks in 3D, be aware that just a handful of cities and regions exploit that dimension. Besides San Francisco Bay, the full coverage extends to Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, Santa Cruz and Tampa in the US, with Rome being the lone international hotspot. If that's too few places to visit, there's always the addition of guided tours. Android users can head over Google Play to get the update today; iOS users shouldn't fret, as they'll get the new maps soon.

Update: Google now has video, if you'd rather not (or can't) install the app to try it yourself.

Why regulators need to be JPMorgan's risk managers | Ben Walsh

JPMorgan is improving risk management by boldly?endeavoring to not make?the same mistake? ? huge positions in credit derivatives ? twice, the WSJ reports. But that?s about as far as the changes go. The CIO will still be able to buy ?asset-backed securities, emerging-markets debt, collateralized debt obligations and troubled corporate debt?. ?That?s an incredibly small correction in response to the CIO?s losses.

The message from Jamie Dimon to traders is clear: our risk management process is fine, keep doing exactly what you were doing before. Just don?t do that (points to ?$2 billion blunder? headline?).

In seeming contrast to his positive view of JPMorgan?s risk management, Dimon had less than kind words for new financial regulation in his testimony last week before the House and Senate. But here?s the weird thing: the two things aren?t actually that different.

In his Senate testimony, Dimon complained that the still to-be enacted Dodd-Frank law was overly complex and vague. Instead, he said he ?[prefers]?a strong, clean regulation system? That?s not what we did?.

This echoes what he said in his annual letter to shareholders: ?[regulatory] complexity and confusion should have?been alleviated, not compounded? As a result of Dodd-Frank, we now have?multiple regulatory agencies with overlapping?rules and oversight responsibilities?. Dimon paired these comments with a?chart that aimed to terrify observers by visualizing regulatory authority using all manner of boxes, colors, lines and (gasp) dotted lines.

Yet here?s Dimon talking about risk management at JPMorgan in his Senate testimony (beginning at the 51-minute mark):

Every business we have has a risk committee. Those risk committees ?and the head of risk in those businesses report to the head of risk at the company and there are periodic conversations between the risk committees and the head of risk of the company and our senior operating group about major exposures we are taking.

There is also oversight from the internal model review committee, the board?s audit, operating and risk committees and various members of senior management on an ad hoc basis. All of which oversee a $2.3 trillion balance sheet. That, in other words, is complexity. I?m sure that if you charted it, ?it would have dotted lines and different colored boxes and all the other things that scare Dimon so much in a regulatory context.

A big reason Dimon prefers his own risk management to new regulation is control. Risk management is largely about transferring control from someone with one set of incentives to someone with a different set of incentives ? from the individual trader, to the desk, to the business unit that oversees that trader. Similarly, regulators function as systemic risk managers, although they have an independent set of incentives.

Dimon?s real problem with regulation, it seems, is that he believes that it?s best that he make a lot of the biggest decisions?personally. That might be bad management, but Dimon has a hard-to-disguise supreme self-confidence. In the case of the CIO, he pushed for increased risk-taking and he got it.

From the public?s perspective, it?s troubling that JPMorgan?s risk management was reportedly being carried out on the whims of a CEO. But to Dimon, that?s presumably a feature, not a flaw. Which is exactly why regulation of this too-big-to-fail bank needs to be at least as robust as JPMorgan?s internal risk management.

Lung nodule matching software dramatically increases radiologists' efficiency

Lung nodule matching software dramatically increases radiologists' efficiency [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 26-Jun-2012

American Roentgen Ray Society

An automated lung nodule matching program can improve radiologists' efficiency almost two-fold, a first of its kind study shows.

The study found that the time required for manual nodule matching ranged from 1 second to about 11.4 minutes, whereas automated nodule matching ranged from less than one second to about 6.6 minutes, said Chi Wan Koo, MD, the lead author of the study.

The study conducted at New York University Langone Medical Center in New York, included 57 patients, yielding a total of 325 pulmonary nodules identified on CT. Four thoracic radiologists manually identified and manually matched the pulmonary nodules on serial CT examinations while being timed. After six weeks, all four radiologists evaluated the same CT studies using the automated nodule matching software and were timed again.

"Pulmonary nodules may be benign or malignant so we follow these nodules over time with repeated CT scans to watch for changes in each nodule. When many nodules are present, it can be difficult to match nodules up for comparison purposes" said Dr. Koo.

The study found that "the greater the number of nodules needing to be matched, the greater the benefit in using the software," said Dr. Koo. Matching of nodules 6 mm or smaller was "particularly aided by use of the automated program," she said. The locations of the nodules and change in nodule size did not have a significant impact on matching efficiency, Dr. Koo added.

The study also found that accuracy was not sacrificed for efficiency. "The interpreting radiologists indicated that the automated program correctly matched nodules anywhere from 79% to 92% of the time," said Dr. Koo.

"Prior studies have evaluated automated nodule matching accuracy, however no study to our knowledge has assessed the impact of a nodule matching program use on CT interpretation efficiency, where efficiency entails both accuracy and speed," Dr. Koo added.

The study is included in the July, 2012 American Journal of Roentgenology, published by the American Roentgen Ray Society.

Is Microsoft Feeding the Android Machine?

The month of June has not been kind to Microsoft hardware partners. Last week, Redmond revealed that it's getting into the Windows tablet game with the introduction of the Surface, meaning it will compete for sales with its own allies. It followed that up with news about Windows Phone 8.

Parametric Design: a Brief History ? AIACC

The form of the house is not amorphous, not a free for all form. On the contrary, its construction has strict boundaries according to the scale of your living. Its shape and form are determined by inherent life processes. ?Frederick Kiesler.

Parametric design is not unfamiliar territory for architects. From ancient pyramids to contemporary institutions, buildings have been designed and constructed in relationship to a variety of changing forces, including climate, technology, use, character, setting, culture, and mood. The computer did not invent parametric design, nor did it redefine architecture or the profession; it did provide a valuable tool that has since enabled architects to design and construct innovative buildings with more exacting qualitative and quantitative conditions.

By the time of a conference held by the Boston Architectural Center in 1964, it had become clear that the electronic era would have a dramatic effect on building design. The aerospace industries were using computers to calculate complex warped surfaces and animated flight path simulations, which fascinated architects. [opposite page] As UCLA student Raphael Roig predicted in his unpublished master?s thesis, The Continuous World of Frederick J. Kiesler, ?It would only be a matter of time before computer technology would be able to reduce to constructible terms the inherent intricacies of forms similar to Kiesler?s multiple-warped surfaces.? [opposite page] Kiesler and other artists and architects?including Antonio Gaudi, Erich Mendelsohn, Frei Otto, Kiesler, and Kiyonori Kikutake?had conceived and modeled complex structures and forms with varying degrees of technical proficiency, and Roig in the 1960s recognized that new computer technologies could assist their design and construction.

It was not, however, until the 1980s that breakthroughs in parametric design became useful to architects. Advances in the quasi-scientific field of plant and animal morphology supported innovation that could be applied with ingenuity to tectonic practices.

Nature had long since developed structural systems of nuanced complexity that architects and designers had applied to structure building shapes and urban organizational patterns. Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy, Sir Patrick Geddes, and others, were influenced by the morphological writings of Goethe (Metamorphosis of Plants, 1790), E.S. Russell (Form and Function, 1916), and R.H. Franc? (Plants as Inventors, 1920). Yet, despite important analytical advances made in D?Arcy Thompson?s On Growth and Form of 1917 (revised 1942), alongside subsequent mathematical models for shaping biological patterns developed by Alan Turing in 1952 and Aristid Lindenmayer in 1968, morphology had become a sleepy science throughout the mid-twentieth-century. As with Kiesler?s flowing forms, it had proven too difficult to measure and draw with detailed accuracy the evolving structures and intricate patterns of organic life. But between Benoit Mandelbrot?s 1982 study in The Fractal Geometry of Nature and K. J. Falconer?s 1990 developments in fractal theory, the computer emerged as a tool for simulating the generation of biological forms (morphogenesis). Coral, sponges, and other simple marine and plant life developing and performing in response to a limited set of measurable criteria?light, ocean current, nutrition, etc.?could be analyzed and reconstructed using parametric design models in the computer. Applying similar morphological simulations in architecture, designers in the late 1980s to mid-1990s began to use the computer alongside software developed for aerospace and the moving picture industry to ?animate form.?

Los Angeles architect Greg Lynn became the foremost theorist and designer to use the computer to generate what became his notorious ?Blob? and ?Fold? architecture. His book Animate Form (1999) studied the history and set the guidelines for architecture that could be calculably grown using genetic systems and codes?if only virtually in the computer. The ?spline? proved most relevant for its simple and concise parametric capacity. It could be pushed, pulled, stretched, and manipulated in coordination with a set of data to produce a continuous curve that surmised an average of multiple vector information. [Images 1, ?spline geometry,? from Animate Form, 1998; and 2, installation, 3D animation diagram, in Folds, Bodies, and Blobs, 1998]

Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos Studio published the 1995 ?Rubber-Mat Project for Rotterdam, 2045,? which outlined how to use computational tools to conceive large urban infrastructures by inputting a range of parametric criteria?set to time and motion with animation software. [3, (c) UNStudio]

Peter Eisenman?s Mus?e Du Quai Branly project of 1999 provided the image of what might be possible using these design techniques, and UN Studio?s 1998 trilogy Move showcased an evolution of complex forms from design to construction, now possible using advanced CAD/CAM-CNC milling machinery alongside new rapid prototyping technology.

The limit to these parametric studies being pursued primarily by students and faculty at Columbia University, the Architectural Association, and other graduate schools?were the forms themselves, which appeared grossly inarticulate, undefined, and too difficult to construct. Besides Lynn and UN Studio, several architects began to deepen their research to engage a more detailed building scale: William Massie, Mark Burry, Mark Goulthorpe, Office dA, SHoP, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Asymptote, Jesse Reiser, Zaha Hadid, and Ocean North are only a few of the most original architects to pursue design and fabrication techniques that investigated ideas relevant to parametric systems.

The Architectural Association?s Design Research Laboratory (AADRL) and Emergent Technologies in Design (EmTech) programs were perhaps the center of international research and development on the subject. Yusuke Obushi, now at the AADRL, presented a remarkable thesis, ?Wave Garden,? at Princeton University in 2002, embodying the principles of parametric design by creating an occupiable, energy-generating surface correlated to the movement of an ocean current. [4]

Jason Payne and Heather Roberge of Gnuform invented a similar if more ?hairy? installation in 2003 at Ohio State University, called Man-o-War. [5]

Michael Hensel of EmTech and Ocean North produced some of the most comprehensive texts on parametric systems and morphogenetic design practices in Architectural Design (AD)?a magazine that provided a rich forum for the most innovative developments of the past fifteen years. ?Architecture and Animation,? ?Versioning,? and ?Morphogenetic Design? were among the more important editions of AD.

UN Studio?s UN Fold showed how parametric design could be advanced on an urban infrastructural scale. [top left four images] (Neil Leach, who contributed to UN Studio?s publication, would eventually develop similar urban growth strategies as a faculty member at USC.)

Perhaps most important, Foreign Office Architects (FOA) completed the Yokohama International Port Terminal in 2002, proving that complex building forms correlated to a series of imagined or perceived parameters could be organized and constructed on a grand scale with dynamic, real-world results. [6, photo by Satoru Mishima]

California architects and educators consistently contributed strong, innovative leadership within this developing field. SCI-Arc and UCLA provided a rich environment to advance new computer and fabrication technology. Highlights of the work of their faculty include David Erdman and Marcelyn Gow of Servo?s ?Lattice Archipelogics? lighting installation (2002) [7]; Marcelo Spina and Georgina Huljich of Patterns?s ?Element? vacuformed installation (2005) [8] and ?Rooted Flow? large scale urban proposal (2005) [9]; Hernan Diaz Alonso?s evocative botanical images and structures [10]; and Gnuform?s sensual NGTV floral bar (2005) [11]. With these design inventions emerged ample debate surrounding concepts of ?beauty? versus the ?grotesque,? as architects clamored to adjust their aesthetic sensibilities to the qualities and sensations inherent to these newly emerging, computer-designed images and forms.

In the Bay Area, architects Lisa Iwamoto and Craig Scott developed the Jelly Fish House (2005), which aligned plant and animal morphology with detailed structural study of tessellated building systems and patterns, correlated parametrically to changes in building stress and strain. [12]

Hoping to make his designs similarly more constructible, Tom Wiscombe of Emergent Architecture in Los Angeles began to exploit D?Arcy Thompson?s studies of dragonfly wings to produce patterned, cantilevering spatial structures for his Paris Courthouse design (2006) and SCI-Arc gallery installation (2007). [13] Benjamin Ball and Gaston Nogues?s of Ball Nogues Studio, in addition, produced the phenomenal ?Maximilian?s Schell? (2005) out of a vortex of 504 parametrically fabricated, laminated mylar, petal-cut sheets.

Tessellated patterning systems soon became fundamental to structuring complex organic forms, and complementary aesthetic theories on ornament, decoration, and elegance began to dominate architectural discourses. Works and texts by Ali Rahim at PennDesign at the University of Pennsylvania and Alejandro Zaera-Polo and Farshid Moussavi of FOA, now respectively at Princeton University School of Architecture and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, fueled these discussions?alongside developments in computer programming and scripting to facilitate a wide range of detailed structural tiling and patterning sequences. Designers inspired by Stephen Wolfram?s formative programming research in A New Kind of Science and Mathematica developed a wide variety of ?Voronoi-esque? tiling scripts to create varied ornamental structures and/or purely decorative, ?skin deep? motifs. Thom Faulders of Faulders Studio and CCA captured this moment in history most succinctly in his screen fa?ade for Studio M?s Airspace Tokyo of 2007, shown here. Benjamin Aranda and Chris Lasch described, developed, and published these scripting procedures in their Tooling (Pamphlet Architecture #27, 2006). [14]

Ultimately, on the scale of constructability, Gehry Partners and Morphosis have proven to be the driving forces behind building innovation on the West Coast in the last twenty years. Investing in CAD/CAM technologies since 1989, Gehry proved that architects could take the lead not only in design, but also in managing the techniques of advanced building systems and their detailed construction. By 2002, Gehry and Partners created Gehry Technologies, a research and technology team committed to supporting advances in the field. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (1997) and the Walt Disney Concert Hall (2000) demonstrated how well these techniques could be implemented. Delivering the new Caltrans District 7 Headquarters (2004) to downtown LA in record speed, Thom Mayne and his team at Morphosis also proved it was possible for architects to design innovative, environmentally conditioned buildings that could be constructed more cost-effectively by working directly with manufactures and fabricators. The computer proved useful not only for design, modeling, and fabrication, but for construction administration, as well. Morphosis?s Phare Tower may very likely prove to be the most advanced building to date to use parametric design technology and fabrication processes to achieve built form. [15, photo of physical model by Michael Powers]

Offshoots of these larger firms have made notable contributions to parametric design on a much smaller scale. Margaret Griffin and John Enright (formally of Morphosis) working with Dr. Anders Carlson?a structural engineer educated at Caltech?exploited CNC milling processes to invent and construct curvilinear plywood ?I? joists to produce complex building structures. SPARCHS, working with Rogan Ferguson (formerly of Gehry and Partners), also alongside Carlson, investigated similar plywood CNC milled structures in addition to continuous tension shell technologies to build a series of roof planes correlated parametrically to shifting environmental conditions using Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application (CATIA) software for their Seadrift House (2004) [16, 17].

The speed at which the architecture profession has been developing within the field of parametric design has been phenomenal. Much of this success can be attributed to the synergy occurring over the past fifteen years between the schools?UCLA, SCI-Arc, UC Berkeley, Cal Poly, USC, and CCA, among others?educating students with the skills needed for experimental practice, and the vanguard firms.

Not everyone, however, is enamored by computer design or the promises of parametric systems. At the same conference at the BAC in 1965, Christopher Alexander, then an assistant professor at UC Berkeley, warned that architects might ?fatally distort the nature of design by restating design problems solely for the purpose of using the computer.? He did not believe that there were design problems?environmental or architectural?so complex that they required a computer to solve, and he was not convinced that architects would not oversimplify design complexity to meet the limited input and operational capacities of their computers. The computer could not keep pace with the facility of human intuition for inventing architectural forms and deriving design solutions for complex problems.

Mathematical parametric and algorithmic procedures most often have proven far too rigid to productively engage the complex cultural, societal, economic, and political projects facing architects today. Designing buildings and cities using parametric and scripting design tools may often appear visually stunning, but for the most part these designs tend to incorporate far too many blind assumptions to be able to respond with nuance to real world situations.

Today, many leading designers who engaged in parametric design over the past ten to fifteen years would to some extent agree. Moving away from the delimiting input techniques used to derive building forms and urban topologies, the design vanguard has begun focusing more on the performative and affective qualities of architecture design and its practice.

Italy beats England on penalties at Euro 2012

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Alessandro Diamanti scored the decisive penalty kick Sunday to send Italy through to the European Championship semifinals with a 4-2 win in the shootout following a 0-0 tie with England and a spot.

Ashley Young hit the crossbar with England's third, and Ashley Cole's attempt was saved by Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy will next play Germany in the semifinals on Thursday in Warsaw, Poland. Defending champion Spain plays Portugal on Wednesday in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Mario Balotelli, Andrea Pirlo ? with an audacious slow chip-shot down the middle of the goal ? and Antonio Nocerino also scored for Italy. Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney scored England's penalties.

The match ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of goal. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a clear shot wide in the clearest chance of the second period of extra time.

Nocerino, another substitute, thought he had scored from Diamanti's cross in the 115th but was offside.

Daniele De Rossi hit the post in the third minute, and Buffon saved a shot from Glen Johnson in the fifth.

For England, it was yet another exit from a major tournament in the quarterfinals after a penalty shootout. England lost to Portugal in the same manner at Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

"We have done the country proud but again we go home with heartbreak and it's difficult to take," said Gerrard, who played in both those previous shootout losses.

Italy dominated the match, which ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of play. The Italians twice hit the post, but were also let down by poor composure in front of goal. Diamanti clipped the post with a curling cross in the 101st minute, and swept a clear shot wide.

The first scoreless match at Euro 2012 was neither dull nor lacking good soccer.

Italy's attacking desire and creativity under coach Cesare Prandelli had playmaker Andrea Pirlo at its heart. Italy had 35 shots, compared to only nine for England.

England had briefly led the shootout after Riccardo Montolivo missed Italy's second penalty. His shot went wide of Joe Hart's right post as the England goalkeeper guessed correctly.

Rooney then sent Buffon the wrong way, firing in his spot kick to the keeper's right to give England a 2-1 lead.

The momentum shifted after Pirlo's bold piece of skill leveled at 2-2.

It had been perhaps the toughest Euro 2012 quarterfinal match to predict, and Italy and England set the tone by both coming close within five minutes.

De Rossi hit the post with a spinning left-foot shot from 25 yards, then Johnson's scooped shot from close range was swatted away by Buffon.

An intriguing match almost demanded that Balotelli take center stage. The Italy forward ran clear in the 25th, but hesitated and allowed John Terry to block his chipped shot.

Balotelli forced Hart, his teammate at Manchester City, to save an acrobatic shot, then surged between England's central defenders before putting a half-volley over the crossbar. He kicked the goal post in frustration.

Italy continued surging in the second half and De Rossi, taking a ball over his shoulder, scuffed his shot wide. De Rossi sank to his knees in obvious exasperation, and more Italian frustration quickly followed.

Three rapid-fire chances in the 52nd saw Hart beat away De Rossi's long-range shot, block Balotelli's follow-up and watch Montolivo lash the loose ball high.

England coach Roy Hodgson had to react to Italy's dominance, and sent on substitutes Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott, who both scored in a 3-2 win over Sweden.

Carroll's muscular presence created a shooting chance for Young but England still failed to convince. Rooney made little impression after an early diving header.

De Rossi was replaced by Nocerino and the substitute threatened in the 89th. He took another crafty pass from Pirlo on the run, but Johnson tracked back to block.

Deep into injury time, Italian defensive jitters created a chance for Rooney but his overhead kick sailed high.

Since April President Obama Cut Oil Prices 21%, Boosted GDP $78.4 Billion

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 17: (L to R) U.S. Pres...

WASHINGTON, DC - APRIL 17: (L to R) U.S. President Barack Obama arrives to speak about the oil markets followed by U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Gary Gensler and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in the Rose Garden of the White House on April 17, 2012 in Washington, DC. Obama announced a plan to increase oversight and crack down on manipulation of the oil markets. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

In April, I predicted that President Obama?s $52 million plan to increase the margin requirements and otherwise tighten the screws on oil speculators ? who borrow huge sums to bet on the direction of oil without taking delivery ? would cut oil prices by 10%. He?s beaten that prediction and the lowered prices of gasoline has added $78.4 billion to its consumers? spending power.

In case you never heard about it, in April the Obama administration asked Congress to spend $52 million to regulate this speculation. According to the Washington Post, this included the following steps:

  • Increase by a factor of six Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC)?surveillance and enforcement staff ?to better deter oil market manipulation,?
  • Boost 10-fold to $10 million the civil and criminal penalties against ?firms that engage in market manipulation,?
  • Give the CFTC authority to increase the trader margins ? the amount of their own capital that traders must set aside for each bet. The administration officials said such authority ?could help limit disruptions in energy markets,? according to the Post.

Why does this have anything to do with the price of oil? That?s simple. When?oil hit $147 a barrel four years ago, those speculators accounted for 81% of the trading volume. And margin requirements can affect the price of oil.

When regulators raise those requirements, oil speculation becomes less attractive to traders and they place bets elsewhere. And when margin requirements drop, the traders pile into their oil speculations ? confident that they can borrow enough to limit their downside while boosting their upside opportunity.?

In February 2011, when commodities exchanges raised the amount of their own capital that speculators must set aside in order to trade ? according to Bloomberg, the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) increased its margin requirements?20% to $6,075 per contract, and the International Exchange (ICE) increased its margin requirement 7% to $5,200?? the price of oil fell 10% within a few months.

And a year later,?the commodities exchanges cut the amount of capital that speculators need to set aside before trading ? the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) cut by 9%?to $6,885 the amount that Nymex crude speculators have to post to trade the so-called front-month contract, according to MarketWatch?? leading prices to soar to $109 that month.

So what?s happened since April? Oil ended the month at $106 and as of June 22, it had lost 21% of its value ? sitting at $84. I guess I under-estimated the impact of the CME?s boost in margin requirements for oil speculators.

But there are other factors that could have affected the price of oil. For example, the dollar has strengthened compared to the Euro since the end of April ? rising 6%?from $1.33/Euro to $1.25/Euro ? and since oil is traded in dollars, the stronger the dollar, the more oil it can buy.

It?s entirely possible that supply and demand have something to do with this as well. MarketWatch claims that ?traders are more concerned about plentiful supplies and deteriorating demand expectations.?? And on June 20, the EIA reported a 2.9 million barrel supply increase in the week ended June 15 while Platts analysts expected to see?a decline of 600,000 barrels for the week.

Certainly oil prices affect gasoline prices and rising gasoline prices tax consumers? budgets. According to AP, ?every one-cent increase in the price of gasoline costs the economy $1.4 billion.? So it stands to reason that a drop in the price of gasoline would add to consumers? discretionary spending.

So just how much has President Obama stimulated the economy through his April crackdown on oil speculators. Well, if my experience is any indication, the answer is quite a bit. After all, I was paying about $4.05 a gallon for mid-grade back then and this week the price?had?fallen to $3.49.

That 56 cents a gallon decline would amount to me saving about $582 a year ? assuming that I fill up my 20 gallon tank once a week. But if the AP is right, that same 56 cent a gallon?drop would add $78.4 billion to U.S. GDP.?

That?s not much for a $15 trillion economy, but it represents a 1,508% return on President Obama?s $52 million investment in two months.
