Probiotics' Effect on Reducing Anxiety | Your Health Journal

newspaperIn a new article from eProbiotics.com, the author discusses how probiotics and probiotic supplments are effective in reducting anxiety. Scientists have recently discovered that the bacteria in our gut somehow communicates with the brain, resulting in the potential cause and/or treatment of certain mental health issues; including using probiotics for treatment of anxiety.

Recent studies have found that supplementing with the probiotics Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus for four weeks, subjects demonstrated improved processing activity in the area of the brain responsible for controlling emotion, sensation and anxiety.

The article also describes a clear connection between the enteric nervous system, located around the digestive system, and the central nervous system; this finding opens new possibilities to the connection between how probiotics may be effective in treating anxiety. Supplementing with the Lactobacillus strain of probiotics also supports the production of the neurotransmitter GABA, the primary neurotransmitter responsible for controlling behavior and mood.

Probiotic supplements may even reduce the production of stress hormones in the body, thus further reducing risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive issues, depression and anxiety.

The full article on probiotics for anxiety is available at http://eprobiotics.com/probiotics-for-anxiety/.

Wrestling rules changed to keep sport in Olympics

MOSCOW (AP) ? Wrestling's governing body hopes rule changes designed to make matches more exciting and easier to understand will get the sport back in the Olympics.

The federation, known by the acronym FILA, is also changing its constitution to include a female vice president and will increase the number of women's weight classes if it remains in the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee's executive board recommended in February that wrestling be removed from the 2020 Games.

The move brought about a crisis within FILA, forcing the resignation of president Raphael Martinetti. Nenad Lalovic took over in an interim capacity and undertook modernizing initiatives, and he was elected president at an extraordinary congress meeting in Moscow on Saturday.

"We got out of this congress with decisions needed for our sport to remain in the Olympic family," Lalovic said.

Wrestling is among eight sports vying for the open slot at the 2020 Olympics. The other contenders are sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding, karate, wushu, roller sports and a combined baseball-softball bid.

They will all make their case to an executive board meeting in late May in St. Petersburg, Russia. The final decision will be voted on by all the IOC members in September.

FILA's bureau formulated the rule changes Friday and presented them to the congress a day later. They include changing matches to two three-minute sessions instead of three two-minute periods, with cumulative scoring rather than the previous two-out-of-three system.

"Cumulative score incentivizes the wrestlers to score more often and consistently," FILA vice president Stan Dziedzic said. "In addition, or equally important, the total score is easier for the spectators to understand. It's difficult for a spectator, not to mention the athletes, when one wrestler wins the first period 5-0, loses the next two periods 1-0 and loses the match.

"The common view was that two minutes was not sufficient time to execute the requisite tactics and strategies to provide an exciting match. What's more, it deprives the viewing audience of witnessing the will of the wrestler."

The changes also refine how to penalize wrestlers who try to "game the rules" by passivity. If an official determines a wrestler is being passive, he receives a verbal warning. If there's a second offense, the action will be briefly stopped and the offending wrestler will have to score a point within 30 seconds or his opponent is awarded a point.

Dziedzic said the aim is "to restore the authority of the officials to incentivize the wrestler to take more risk. The onus must be placed on the wrestlers to win the match."

Congress deliberated at length when to implement the chances. Some delegates argued an immediate change would be difficult to adapt to, while others said FILA needs to show it's changing in order to persuade the IOC to keep wrestling in the Olympics.

Dziedzic said FILA would work to have the world championships in September run under the new rules.

Meet Eric Gati of My4HrWorkWeek.com - Blogging Tips

One of my favorite things about the blogging niche is that so many people get started with their own blog to document their process for starting their own business and maybe even leaving their job. This is something that Eric has done with his blog over at My 4 Hour Workweek. The site is loaded up with great content for anyone who is looking to start their own blog or business online, but also goes into detail on Eric?s earnings, his niche sites and many of the other resources and experiences he had in the world of online marketing. Yet another awesome addition in the meet the bloggers interview series.

1.) Please tell us about yourself and how you got into blogging?

Very briefly about me: I?m a 28 year old CPA who lives in Chicago, and I have a little over 4 years of experience working at an accounting firm.? I like what I do, but I?ve always felt that there was more I could be doing outside of work.

For me, blogging was initially inspired by the book ?The 4-Hour Workweek?.? I knew I wanted to create some kind of income outside of my ?9 to 5? job, and I wanted a blog to document my journey.

So, in 2009, My 4-Hour Workweek was born.? Although the blog has grown in popularity over the past few years (now hovering around 25,000-30,000 visits per month, with over 8,000 subscribers between RSS and my Aweber e-mail list), I?m still a regular guy with a regular job.? I mention this not as a point of pride, but more as a partial explanation for why I haven?t achieved the great success that many other bloggers have (who you have interviewed in this series).? As much as I hate to admit it, my job as a CPA still comes first.

In a way, one of my goals is to show people that you can have a very time consuming ?day job? and still make some significant money online.

2.) What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?

The focus of my blog is really about my journey to create sources of online income (preferably passive income).? You could call it an ?internet marketing? blog, but it?s really much more than that ? and I definitely don?t consider myself an internet marketing ?expert? or ?guru?.

I like to think that one day, if/when I ?make it big?, someone else or I will be able to look back at all my posts and clearly see what led me to success, and more importantly, where I failed along the way.? I chose this niche because it allows me to discuss everything that I?m doing online to make money, all in one place.

3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?

Because I don?t sell ad space or use PPC ads like AdSense, my blog traffic is almost exclusively monetized using affiliate links.? My top income source is usually Commission Junction, where I earn affiliate income through hosting services, peer-to-peer lending, and other services/products offered through CJ (that are relevant to my readers).? Because my blog was not intended to be a source of my income online (it?s merely supposed to document my journey), I don?t aggressively try to monetize it.? However, it still happens to be the most lucrative part of my online business.

One of my recent successes was with this page that I was able to rank on page 1 of Google for the highly competitive phrase ?make money online? for the past 6+ months.? The ranking fluctuates quite a bit, as you would imagine ? at one point, I was ranked #2 on page 1, and currently, I?ve fallen to the second page (depending on where you look).? The crazy part is, I had no intention of ranking for that phrase, but nevertheless it turned out to be a great source of my blog?s income.

4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?

The importance of working hard and sticking with it despite slow growth initially.? It?s so easy to give up when you?re first starting out and not seeing results.? I know my first year of blogging was nearly wasted because I didn?t think anyone would ever read my writing.? If I would?ve put a little bit more effort in early on, and started many projects sooner, I probably would be a lot further ahead today.

5.) What are three blogs that you visit almost daily?

1.? Smart Passive Income
2.? Quick Sprout
3.? Niche Pursuits

6.) Can you give us three recommended tools/services that you use with your blogging?

Because I know most bloggers use WordPress, here are 3 plugins that I find helpful:

1.? WordPress SEO by Joost ? This is probably the only SEO plugin most blogger?s need, as it makes just about everything SEO-related easier for you.
2.? Tweet Old Post ? A great way to give some love to your older blog posts automatically ? I use this on a few of my blogs, and it works quite well.
3.? Sharebar ? An attractive way to add sharing buttons (Tweet, ?Like?, etc.) to your blog posts.

7.) What advice would you have for someone who is just starting with their first blog?

1.? Keep pushing forward.? As I mentioned above, it?s so easy to give up when you?re starting out.? Success (except in very rare occasions) doesn?t happen quickly.? And even those who appear to succeed quickly probably had many earlier failures that you just aren?t aware of.

2.? Work hard and be consistent.? This probably applies to many areas of life, but it?s especially true with blogging.? Fight the urge to be lazy ? if you planned to blog three times a week, hold yourself to that schedule.? And as a side note, don?t sacrifice quality just to publish a blog post.? Once you?ve start putting out quality content with a level of consistency, you will find that your audience will return with consistency.

8.) What?s the best advice or tip you?ve discovered about blogging since getting started?

Build relationships ? even though most of your online relationships are virtual, they can have a very real impact on your blog?s success.? You can build relationships by starting small and doing something as simple as leaving a comment on another blog in your niche.

Get to know people, and don?t immediately jump on the opportunity to ask for something.? Strong relationships are built on a two way street, and the best thing you can do is offer value without expecting anything in return.? Don?t worry, good things will come.

9.) If you only had $100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?

I would probably buy hosting, a domain, and good keyword research software (such as Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro).? You won?t know how to use it right away, but there is plenty of free information out there to show you how to use it.

I wouldn?t spend a dime on any eBooks or training courses (with a few exceptions) ? again, there is a wealth of free information on the internet, and if you?re willing to invest your time, you can do most things without spending any money.

10.) How can readers of the blog get in touch with you?

Landing gear issue leads to plane's belly landing

NEWARK, N.J (AP) ? An airline official says a US Airways flight with 34 people aboard was forced to make a belly landing at Newark International Airport after experiencing landing gear trouble. No injuries were reported.

US Airways spokesman Davien Anderson tells The Associated Press that a turboprop plane that left Philadelphia shortly before 11 p.m. Friday landed safely at Newark with its landing gear retracted at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Anderson said the flight, being operated by Piedmont Airlines, was carrying 31 passengers and three crew members. He says the plane circled Newark in a holding pattern while working to get the gear down. After several failed attempts to get the gear down, the plane landed on its belly.

Anderson says the passengers were evacuated to the terminal by bus. He says US Airways is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

College Exam 'Error' Reveals A Thorough Grader, A Kind Fate ...

From a World Wide Web of embarrassing possibilities, this student may have made out just peachy after what one can only hope was an accidental copy-and-paste error wound up on the "Works Cited" page of a final paper.

Instead of linking to a source that explained the Munich Agreement, the reader was directed to a page that sounds like it could be run by a "Jersey Shore"-inspired silk-screening company.

Here's how that worked out:

Pause for a minute, essayists, and look through your browser history this week. This could have been so much worse. Object lesson: Bibliographies are read, too. Make sure that links to Facebook, eBay, Amazon or anything of a more (ahem) "private nature" don't get included.

South Florida Insurance Fraud: Feds Charge 92 Over $20 Million In ...

The vehicle collisions looked like typical South Florida accidents with motorists and passengers reporting they needed treatment from chiropractors and massage therapists.

But investigators said the crashes were carefully staged by willing participants who were trained how to defraud the insurance system to make money for themselves and a highly organized group of medical professionals, clinic owners and recruiters.

Investigators announced charges Thursday against 33 people they said were involved in staging accidents for insurance fraud -- the latest hit in a three-year investigation that identified about $20 million in fraudulently obtained payouts from insurers.

"If you get upset about your car insurance premiums going up, this crime is one of the reasons why," said William J. Maddalena, the assistant special agent in charge of FBI Miami. "Every time an insurance payout is made for a staged accident in Florida, we all feel the pain in the pocketbook."

Operation Sledgehammer, a state and federal investigation, has led to charges being filed against a total of 92 defendants from Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Those already convicted have been ordered to pay more than $5 million in restitution to insurance companies so far, prosecutors said.

The operation got its code name when undercover investigators saw suspects using a sledgehammer to make vehicles look like they'd been in an accident.

The fraud involved a "massive," complicated, highly organized scheme that investigators said included everyone from clinic owners and medical staff who provided fraudulent diagnoses and prescribed fake treatment, to office workers who billed for the services, and recruiters who found accident "victims" and trained them to stage collisions on the streets and highways of South Florida.

The criminal charges filed this week targeted 33 people from West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Weston, Parkland, Davie, Hollywood, Boynton Beach, Greenacres, Doral, Miami and Hialeah with a slew of charges including mail fraud and money-laundering conspiracies, structuring financial transactions and participating in staged-accident fraud.

The scheme dated from about October 2006 to December 2012 and the defendants staged accidents and submitted false insurance claims through 21 chiropractic clinics in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties that they controlled, authorities said.

Of the 33 charged, 26 have been arrested or agreed to surrender, federal and state law enforcement officials said at a Thursday afternoon news conference in the U.S. Attorney's Office in West Palm Beach.

The ringleaders recruited chiropractors Lazaro Rodriguez, 58, of Doral, and Kenneth Karow, 53, of Boynton Beach, and others to serve as the named owners of some of the clinics, investigators said.

Five of the defendants, including alleged ringleaders Vladimir Lopez, 38, and Lazaro Vigoa Mauri, 45, both formerly of West Palm Beach, have fled to Cuba and they and the other defendants who have not yet been caught are considered fugitives, authorities said.

Maddalena said the investigation was kicked off by a tip from a member of the public and urged anyone with information to call their local police department.

The participants in the fraud were trained by recruiters on how to make the accidents look realistic, how to file police reports and insurance claims, how to fake injuries and where to go for treatment, Maddalena said. The ringleaders made sure that insurance checks were deposited into accounts they controlled so they could pay the participants, he said.

Of the 92 people charged to date in the fraud scheme, the U.S. Attorney's Office filed federal charges against 56 of them and the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office filed state charges against 36 of them.

Lawrence Schechtman, 45, a chiropractor from Parkland, Olinda Rodriguez, 39, a massage therapist from West Palm Beach, and Iris Roca, 41, a massage therapist from Davie, were charged separately with participating in staged accident fraud schemes and are expected to surrender in the next few days.

Nine-year-old Mars rover passes 40-year-old record

May 17, 2013 ? While Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt visited Earth's moon for three days in December 1972, they drove their mission's Lunar Roving Vehicle 19.3 nautical miles (22.210 statute miles or 35.744 kilometers). That was the farthest total distance for any NASA vehicle driving on a world other than Earth until yesterday.

The team operating NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity received confirmation in a transmission from Mars today that the rover drove 263 feet (80 meters) on Thursday, bringing Opportunity's total odometry since landing on Mars in January 2004 to 22.220 statute miles (35.760 kilometers).

Cernan discussed this prospect a few days ago with Opportunity team member Jim Rice of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The Apollo 17 astronaut said, "The record we established with a roving vehicle was made to be broken, and I'm excited and proud to be able to pass the torch to Opportunity."

The international record for driving distance on another world is still held by the Soviet Union's remote-controlled Lunokhod 2 rover, which traveled 23 miles (37 kilometers) on the surface of Earth's moon in 1973.

Opportunity began a multi-week trek this week from an area where it has been working since mid-2011, the "Cape York" segment of the rim of Endeavour Crater, to an area about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) away, "Solander Point."

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL also manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project and its rover, Curiosity, which landed on Mars in August 2012.

Jekyll into Hyde: Breathing auto emissions turns HDL cholesterol from 'good' to 'bad'

May 15, 2013 ? Academic researchers have found that breathing motor vehicle emissions triggers a change in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, altering its cardiovascular protective qualities so that it actually contributes to clogged arteries.

In addition to changing HDL from "good" to "bad," the inhalation of emissions activates other components of oxidation, the early cell and tissue damage that causes inflammation, leading to hardening of the arteries, according to the research team, which included scientists from UCLA and other institutions.

The findings of this early study, done in mice, are available in the online edition of the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology, a publication of the American Heart Association, and will appear in the journal's June print edition.

Emission particles such as those from vehicles are major pollutants in urban settings. These particles are coated in chemicals that are sensitive to free radicals, which have been known to cause oxidation. The mechanism behind how this leads to atherosclerosis, however, has not been well understood.

In the study, the researchers found that after two weeks of exposure to vehicle emissions, mice showed oxidative damage in the blood and liver -- damage that was not reversed after a subsequent week of receiving filtered air. Altered HDL cholesterol may play a key role in this damaging process, they said.

"This is the first study showing that air pollutants promote the development of dysfunctional, pro-oxidative HDL cholesterol and the activation of an internal oxidation pathway, which may be one of the mechanisms in how air pollution can exacerbate clogged arteries that lead to heart disease and stroke," said senior author Dr. Jesus Araujo, an associate professor of medicine and director of environmental cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

For the study, one group of mice was exposed to vehicle emissions for two weeks and then filtered air for one week, a second was exposed to two weeks of emissions with no filtered air, and a third was exposed to only clean, filtered air for two weeks. This part of the collaborative research took place at the Northlake Exposure Facility at the University of Washington, headed by study author Michael E. Rosenfeld.

"The biggest surprise was finding that after two weeks of exposure to vehicle emissions, one week of breathing clean filtered air was not enough to reverse the damage," said Rosenfeld, a professor of environmental and occupational health sciences and pathology at the University of Washington.

Mice were exposed for a few hours, several days a week, to whole diesel exhaust at a particulate mass concentration within the range of what mine workers usually are exposed to.

After the exposures, UCLA scientists analyzed blood and tissue specimens and checked to see if the protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of HDL, known as "good" cholesterol, were still intact. They used special analytical laboratory procedures originally developed by study author Mohamad Navab at UCLA to evaluate how "good" or "bad" HDL had become. The team found that many of the positive properties of HDL were markedly altered after the air-pollutant exposure.

For example, the HDL of mice exposed to two weeks of vehicle emissions, including those that received a subsequent week of filtered air, had a much-decreased ability to protect against oxidation and inflammation induced by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, known as "bad" cholesterol, than the mice that had only been exposed to filtered air.

According to researchers, without HDL's ability to inhibit LDL, along with other factors, the oxidation process may run unchecked. Moreover, not only was the HDL of the mice exposed to diesel exhaust unable to protect against oxidation, but, in fact, it further enhanced the oxidative process and even worked in tandem with the LDL to promote even more oxidative damage.

Researchers also found a twofold to threefold increase of additional oxidation products in the blood of mice exposed to vehicle emissions, as well as activation of oxidation pathways in the liver. The degree of HDL dysfunction was correlated with the level of these oxidation markers.

"We suggest that people try to limit their exposure to air pollutants, as they may induce damage that starts during the exposure and continues long after it ends," said first author Fen Yin, a researcher in the division of cardiology at the Geffen School of Medicine.

The current research builds on the team's previous findings that ambient ultrafine particles commonly found in air pollution, including vehicle emissions, enhance the build-up of cholesterol plaques in the arteries and that HDL may play a role.

"Our research helps confirm that the functionality of HDL may be as important to check as the levels," said study author Dr. Alan Fogelman, executive chair of the department of medicine and director of the atherosclerosis research unit at the Geffen School of Medicine.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Additional authors included Akeem Lawal, Jerry Ricks, Julie R. Fox and Tim Larson.

Google's Products Are Just By-Products Of Its Quest For Tomorrow ...

Google isn?t about search, apps or devices. Those are just vehicles, and there?s no destination. That?s because Larry Page?s Google is on an unending pursuit of the future, not just next quarter?s earnings.?The scattershot of projects Google revealed today at I/O had just one unifying factor: They further that pursuit, or empower the curiosity of others.

Google is lucky. It takes a lot of fuel to shoot for the moon. Fuel that most tech companies don?t have or are unwilling to burn. But Google has ads that pay for everything the company does. The armies of employees, the seas of servers, and the laboratories for experimenting in both the digital and physical worlds.

I talked to a Google Chrome engineer the other night. He described his job as almost academic. No one ever talks about money ? how much things cost or how much they would make. His job is simply to let people access information as quickly and efficiently as possible. That?s the future, and a browser is just the by-product.

Google didn?t launch its new on-demand subscription service Google Play Music All Access just because it wanted to get into music; Android is Google?s push to see the potential of our phones. Music is a fundamental companion to being on the go, so why not let people listen to any song they want? All Access was just something Google had to do to see our lifestyles merge with mobile computing.

Digital communication shouldn?t just be a degraded version of talking with someone in person. When we can share, emote and collaborate seamlessly no matter where we are or what device we?re on, brilliant things will happen.?So out springs a new cross-platform messaging version of Hangouts. Google isn?t trying to desperately win market share and engagement with today?s big revamp of Google Maps, it?s just another step towards the future of navigation.

Google also wants to accelerate other intrepid explorers chasing what?s next. Today it gave developers new cloud messaging capabilities, Android Studio for testing apps, extra location APIs, and an easy app translation service. It knows it can?t unlock the future by itself, so it lets others forge their own keys.

Page On The EdgeCompare all this to the other tech giants who seem myopically focused on today?s wars for display ad and mobile hardware dollars.?Apple and Samsung seem busy with another iteration of their latest smartphone, or linear innovation for watches and TVs. Even if Apple is secretly concocting wetware computers that go inside our bodies, it still seems to be in service of building ?beautiful? products and making money.?Facebook has its hands full with mobile with projects like Home, and Amazon is making TV shows.

They all seem vulnerable. One or two flops away from fading. A crummy iPhone, a hip new social app, and suddenly the tides could turn.?Meanwhile, Google has leapfrogged into the next decade with exponential innovation.

And that?s the plan. Google?s CEO?Larry Page said on stage ?we should be building things that don?t exist.? {Update: After the keynote I talked with co-founder Sergey Brin who explained ?It?s important to be willing to take risks, and we do take risks, I?m very excited about these [tapping the Google Glass he was currently wearing]. We?re willing to make bets. Some of them pan out, some of them don?t.?But I think there are a lot of companies that as they grow they become more conservative.?}

Google doesn?t have to be conservative. Search, maps, Android ? they aren?t going to disappear. And with that foundation, Google is free to try, tinker and even fail. But when it fails, it learns, and for Google, that?s the whole point.

Alonso thrills home fans with Spanish GP win

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Fernando Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix by nearly 10 seconds in a dominant performance in front of his home fans on Sunday to close the gap on championship leader Sebastian Vettel and get back in the Formula One title race.

Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen finished second for the third straight race, with Alonso's Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa third as most drivers chose a four-stop strategy due to ongoing problem with Pirelli's fast-degrading tires. That issue remains a big concern as tires still shred far too easily despite pre-race modifications.

Starting from fifth place, Alonso won his second race this season, showing that Ferrari can challenge Red Bull for pure speed. Alonso was easily quicker than Vettel, with the three-time defending champion finishing 38.2 seconds behind in fourth ahead of teammate Mark Webber.

"In the four years with Ferrari this is the best (car) we've had," Alonso said. "I realized the race was in our pockets if we don't do mistakes."

He climbed on top of his Ferrari and waved a Spanish flag gleefully as he encouraged applause from the fans, who broke into chants of "Alonso, Alonso."

It was Alonso's second win in Barcelona ? the first coming in 2006 ? and his seventh career podium on the Circuit de Catalunya.

"It's very special winning at home and it doesn't matter how many times you repeat it," Alonso said. "Very long last laps because you want to finish as quickly as possible. Difficult qualifying as we were not too quick yesterday but we knew we had the pace on the long runs. We did it and everything worked perfect."

More importantly, the two-time former champion closed the gap on Vettel from 30 to 17 points, moving up to third overall. Raikkonen is only four points behind Vettel, who leads with 89 after five races.

"We have to just take what we can from every race," said Raikkonen, who was 9.3 seconds behind Alonso. "We just have to keep working as a team to achieve the biggest goal we can."

Massa's performance was arguably even better than Alonso's, as he started from ninth due to a grid penalty in qualifying.

"I was a little disappointed after qualifying, but the race was very good, we were very aggressive," Massa said. "I think we are in the right direction so I hope from now on we are fighting for the podium in every race."

Mercedes had a disappointing day after Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton started on the front grid. As has been the case this season, the Mercedes cars ? which are fast in qualifying ? again lacked race pace and durability as Rosberg finished sixth and Hamilton drifted back to 12th and was a lap off the pace.

"We have just got a lot to do to catch up with the others, but we will get there," Hamilton said.

He made a terrible start as Vettel flew past him at the first corner and Alonso found a small gap to surge past Raikkonen on turn one and then past Hamilton on the outside of turn three to move quickly into third.

Rosberg held on at the front as Massa quickly climbed from ninth to sixth and Grosjean went the other way.

Jenson Button's miserable weekend looked set to continue as he drifted from 14th to 17th, although he salvaged some pride with a credible eighth-place finish, holding off a late surge from teammate Sergio Perez to finish behind Paul di Resta.

"Turn one was a mess so to finish eighth probably wasn't too bad," Button said. "But there is a lot of work still to do."

Grosjean had been optimistic heading into the race after securing his first podium of the season with third place in Bahrain. But the Frenchman's back wheels locked up early on and he had to pull out due to mechanical failure.

With fears over tire degradation prominent, drivers took early pit stops.

"At this rate, F1 is going to become a pit-stop contest with a few race laps thrown in," Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 F1 champion, said during television commentary. The issue was highlighted when strips of rubber started flying off Jean-Eric Vergne's Toro Rosso less than 40 laps into the race. He retired late on.

With a third of the race gone, Ferrari's pace was unrelenting and Alonso led Vettel by four seconds before pitting for the second time.

Raikkonen won the season-opening Australian GP on a three-stop strategy but the Finn lost time the longer he stayed on the older tires.

Caterham driver Giedo van der Garde's left rear wheel came off entirely and he also had to retire.

It was a busy afternoon in the pits as Sauber released Nico Hulkenberg too early and he bumped into the back of a Toro Rosso and with Pastor Maldonado ? last year's surprise winner ? pitting in the wrong place.

Rightist GERB holds lead in Bulgaria's election

By Tsvetelia Tsolova and Sam Cage

SOFIA (Reuters) - The rightist GERB party held the lead in Bulgaria's election on Sunday but its prospects of forming another government, after the last one was ousted by protests, looked uncertain after its potential partner ruled out a deal.

Turnout was the lowest in post-communist history, at around 53 percent, reflecting the disaffection with the political elite in a country where unemployment is close to an eight-year high.

GERB, which resigned in February after often violent demonstrations against poverty and corruption, was set to win 31 percent of the votes, ahead of the Socialists on 25-27 percent, exit polls by Alpha Research and Sova Harris agencies showed.

Deputy leader Tsvetan Tsvetanov said GERB could consider a minority government with backing from others, but its most likely partner, the nationalist Attack, ruled out support for a GERB-led government to lead the country of 7.3 million.

"GERB will be responsible to the nation," a subdued Tsvetanov told national television, adopting a conciliatory rather than triumphant tone. "Our leader is capable of proposing and forming a government - it could be a minority one."

A delay in forming a new administration may raise questions over economic policy, with low debt needed to maintain confidence in a currency pegged to the euro, and hinder growth. It may ultimately mean a new election.

All parties had waged a low-profile campaign, with few political posters in Bulgaria's towns and villages, where half-finished buildings evoke memories of the credit boom and bust under the 2005-2009 Socialist-led government.

They also dropped their usual post-election rallies.

About 200 people gathered in Sofia as polls closed, waving Bulgarian flags and banners criticizing GERB and the political elite, briefly scuffling with police.

But the protests were nothing like those earlier this year when thousands took to the streets and seven people set themselves on fire in disgust at corruption and organized crime and at how one in four Bulgarians still live below the poverty line, six years after joining the European Union.

NO SUPPORT

Pollster Alpha Research predicted GERB would win 97 of the 240 seats in parliament and the Socialists 85, leaving both needing partners to form a majority coalition - likely to be fragile given the bad feeling after an ill-tempered campaign.

Two other parties - the ethnic Turkish MRF, a previous partner of the Socialists, on 10-11 percent, and Attack on 7-8 percent - were set to enter parliament.

Attack leader Volen Siderov said his party could not support GERB - although analysts said this might be a negotiating position and a deal could still be possible.

"We cannot support someone who has declared anti-state and anti-Bulgarian policies," Siderov told reporters.

A new pro-business party, Bulgaria for the Citizens, could also beat the 4 percent threshold, which would reduce other groups' seats. First official results are expected on Monday.

GERB pledges to keep debt down and maintain economic stability, winning favor from investors, and supporters praise it for building schools and motorways. The Socialists say they will spend more, creating jobs and lifting growth above the 1 percent expected this year.

Under GERB, led by former bodyguard Boiko Borisov, Bulgaria has kept one of the lowest debt levels in the EU but its opponents say that has constrained growth in the country where the average monthly wage is 400 euros ($520).

About 2 million Bulgarians have left since the 1989 fall of communism and the country still struggles to supply running water and reliable electricity to some of its people.

GERB's campaign was marred by allegations of illegal wiretapping and the seizure of illegal ballot papers at a printing shop owned by one of its local councilors, increasing fears of vote rigging although there have so far been no significant complaints.

"The law protects politicians and they protect criminals. They are connected while we are still the poorest country in the European Union," IT specialist Kalin Borislavov, 28, said in Sofia.

Pakistan marks democratic milestone in close-fought election

By John Chalmers and Michael Georgy

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan goes to the polls on Saturday for an election that will bring the first transition between civilian governments, but the milestone's significance may be lost on some voters who have lost faith in politics after years of corruption and misrule.

Widespread disenchantment with the two mainstream parties appeared this week to have brought a late surge of support for former cricket star Imran Khan, who could end up holding the balance of power if there is no clear-cut winner.

If that happens, weeks of haggling to form a coalition will follow and raise the risk of an unstable government in a country ruled by the military for more than half of its history.

That would only make it more difficult to reverse the disgust with politicians felt among the country's 180 million people and drive through the reforms needed to revive its near-failed economy.

Power cuts can last more than 10 hours a day in some places, crippling key industries like textiles, and a new International Monetary Fund bailout may be needed soon.

Dozens of people have been killed in the run-up to the vote by the al-Qaeda-linked Pakistan Taliban, which regards the poll as un-Islamic and has vowed to disrupt the process with suicide bombings.

"The problems facing the new government will be immense, and this may be the last chance that the country's existing elites have to solve them," said Anatol Lieven, a professor at King's College, London, and author of a book on Pakistan.

"If the lives of ordinary Pakistanis are not significantly improved over the next five years, a return to authoritarian solutions remains a possibility," Lieven wrote in a column in the Financial Times on Friday.

The army stayed out of politics during the five years of the last government, but it still sets the nuclear-armed country's foreign and security policy and will steer the thorny relationship with Washington as NATO troops withdraw from neighboring Afghanistan next year.

The party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif looks set to win the most seats in the one-day vote, which gets under way across the country at 8 a.m. (0300 GMT).

However, Khan's dark-horse challenge could deprive Sharif of a majority and dash his hopes for a return to power 14 years after he was ousted in a military coup, jailed and later exiled.

Pakistan's best-known sportsman, who led a playboy lifestyle in his younger days, Khan is seen by many as a refreshing change from the dynastic politicians who long relied on a patronage system to win votes and are often accused of corruption.

THREAT OF ATTACKS

Voters will elect 272 members of the National Assembly and to win a simple majority, a party would have to take 137 seats.

However, the election is complicated by the fact that a further 70 seats, most reserved for women and members of non- Muslim minorities, are allocated to parties on the basis of their performance in the contested constituencies. To have a majority of the total of 342, a party would need 172.

Khan appeals mostly to young, urban voters because of his calls for an end to corruption, a new political landscape and a halt to U.S. drone strikes on Pakistani soil.

The 60-year-old is in hospital after injuring himself in a fall at a party rally, which may also win him sympathy votes.

Early opinion polls had put the share of votes for his Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) party as low as single figures. However, a survey released on Wednesday showed 24.98 percent of voters nationally planned to vote for his party, just a whisker behind Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).

The Herald magazine poll showed Sharif's party remained the front-runner in Punjab, which, with the largest share of parliamentary seats, usually dictates the outcome of elections.

It also pointed to an upset for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), which led the last government, placing it third. Pakistan's politics have long been dominated by the PML-N and the PPP, whose most prominent figure is President Asif Ali Zardari, widower of assassinated former premier Benazir Bhutto.

"The PPP didn't take care of the poor masses and always engages in corrupt practices whenever they come to power," said Sher Nabi, a banker from Peshawar.

"So we've decided to vote for the PTI candidate this time and test Imran Khan to see if he proves as honest as he claims."

In the violence ahead of the election, militants mostly targeted secular-leaning parties in the PPP's outgoing coalition and largely spared more conservative parties that question Pakistan's participation in the U.S.-led campaign against militancy, including those of both Khan and Sharif.

Many Pakistanis still plan to vote despite the bloodshed.

"I want to go out and vote but my parents are scared there will be a bomb or a shooting," said 21-year-old Nargis Fatima, a student in Quetta, one of Pakistan's most volatile cities.

"This is the first time I'm old enough to vote and I'll try my best to go out there and feel that I am part of whatever new set-up comes into place."

Online dating increases in popularity among students | Golden Gate ...

Julia Fienstien Adams met Scott Adams after she helped a close friend create a Match.com profile. She and Adams have been married for 4 years. Photo by Frank Leal/Xpress

Julie Feinstein Adams spent two tiresome years on JDate, an online dating website for Jewish singles, going on dates that led her nowhere.

One year later, after helping a close friend with her online profile on Match.com, Adams made an account for herself, which is where she met Scott ? and they are now happily married.

?I saw one profile come up that I wanted to contact for myself. So I signed up on Match just to meet (Scott),? said Adams, a dating coach and SF State alumnus. ?We emailed briefly, accidentally lost touch and then, when we reconnected, he had decided he was swearing off online dating, even though he said I seemed nice.?

Adams and her husband are one example of many success stories stemming from a burgeoning online dating scene. The rising trend of online dating has spawned a variety of new dating websites that continue to increase in popularity with younger singles.

Studying 100,000 profiles of each age group of single men and women between the ages of 18 and 48, OkCupid analysts found that the number of online daters peaks at age 24, but drops off sharply at the age of 30. OkCupid, along with Match.com, were the second and third most searched dating sites on Google in 2012, according to Google Trends.

?It seems like the stigma of only older people using online dating websites has decreased and more young people are starting to use it,? Adams said. ?Most of my clients use OkCupid and Match.com.?

There are also sites that can set up blind dates or group dates based on mutual hobbies and interests. One includes Meet me at the Airport, a website where one can connect with other travelers at an airport. Another, Crazy Blind Date, an app extension of OkCupid that allows users to pick a time and place, and the app will search for nearby dates based on interests from the person?s OkCupid account.

Take Tinder as an example. This newer dating app is based on a rating system where users click an ?X? for no, or a heart for yes, based on personal perceptions of attractiveness. If both click ?yes? on each other?s photos, the two users become matched up and can then chat.

?Tinder weeds out people you aren?t interested in. I?ve gotten matched up with over 100 people, and I?m usually pretty selective,? Alexa Kern, political science major said. ?I think Tinder is definitely appealing to younger singles and can be a little superficial, but for example, if a guy says he?s 29 and his most recent picture is from five years ago, then you know something?s a bit off and there?s a few discrepancies.?

The 20-year-old Kern signed up for an OkCupid account a few months ago as a joke to see what type of responses she?d get. After a few weeks, she decided to try her luck online for a match. So far, it?s proved to be a dead end she said.

?I haven?t had any good experiences on OkCupid because I get so many messages from gross older men asking if I have a daddy fetish or asking me to live with them. It gets to the point where I would only respond to a few people,? she said.

Andrea Flores used Craigslist?s ?strictly platonic? section to connect with other individuals nearby. Both anxious and scared about stranger?s true identities, Flores was drawn to the immediacy of being able to contact random people whenever they posted an ad.

?I messaged a guy back and forth (for) about a year before we met each other in person,? the 22-year-old UC Berkeley student said. ?We met up for coffee and went to eat sushi, but we never really hung out after that.?

Looking for love online doesn?t always end in despair. Music graduate student Whitney Smith used OkCupid for six months, where she met and dated a guy for three months.

?I went with a group of my friends and met him for the first time at Twin Peaks,? Smith said. ?The date went really well and I think we even kissed that night.?

However, some students feel they will never use dating websites again.

?Don?t do online dating, unless you are looking for a booty call,? health education major Michelle Gentilcore said.

Although she misses face-to-face interactions, Adams believes virtual communication has affected our personal interactions with each other.

?In terms of dating and virtual communication, one is the problem of falling in love with a profile before you meet the person, which sets you up for a let down,? she said. ?The other is that you go around in the world, wishing that everyone had a button that you could click to find out their availability and interests.?

There can be a big difference between a person?s intentions online when sending a message and how someone?perceives?that message, according to Adams. Although virtual communication can foster positive relationships long term if you find the right balance, Adams suggests talking on the phone to improve social interaction.

?I?ve always been cautious about electronic communication and how it seems to decrease the quality of personal interactions,? Adams said. ?I am concerned that we are losing an important touch point. Hearing a person?s voice can help you determine if that in-person meeting is worth your time.?

Online or offline, being clear about what you want from a relationship and learning to say no is the key to a successful relationship, Adams said.

?The path to dating success is still the same: identifying what you want, looking at your patterns and habits that may be getting in your way of creating partnership and learning through dating,? she said. ?Trying out new ideas and behaviors, honing your intuition, seeing ?rejection? as a gift that frees you up and finding that ?cosmic glue? with a compatible, available partner, to get into a relationship that sticks.?

Wash. officials say state courts office was hacked

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) ? The Washington state Administrative Office of the Courts was hacked sometime between last fall and February, and up to 160,000 Social Security numbers and 1 million driver's license numbers may have been accessed during the data breach of its public website, officials said Thursday.

Court officials said they have only confirmed that 94 Social Security numbers were obtained and they don't believe the larger number was compromised, but they wanted to alert the public to the possibility as a precaution.

The broader information "just happened to be on a server in an area that was accessed," said Veronica Diseth, director of the courts' information services division.

The breach happened due to vulnerability in an Adobe Systems Inc. software program, ColdFusion, that has since been patched, court officials said. The hack happened sometime after September but wasn't caught until February, they said.

Telephone and email messages were left for Adobe representatives seeking comment.

Mike Keeling, the courts' information technology operations and maintenance manager, said officials were alerted to the breach by a business on the East Coast that had a similar intrusion.

"They recognized our information in their breach log," Keeling said, which led them to install the patch provided by Adobe and start an investigation.

When court officials were first alerted to the breach, they believed all of the information accessed was public record, and didn't think confidential information was taken, but following an investigation by the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center, the broader breach was confirmed in April, said courts spokeswoman Wendy Ferrell.

Court officials said a law enforcement agency also investigated the case but they declined to say which one. They said the investigation was concluded and there was no information on who might be to blame.

Keeling said he didn't believe the courts were a specific target.

"The hackers were probably opportunistic," he said. "They were more than likely just fishing for data."

Ferrell said that once the breach was confirmed, it took additional time to go through the files and increase security to the website, which is why there was a lag in notifying the public. The 94 known names breached are being contacted by letter, she said. The rest of the people who are potentially affected come from a defined group:

? Those booked into a city or county jail within the state of Washington between September 2011 and December 2012 may have had their name and Social Security number accessed.

? Names and driver's license numbers may have been obtained from people who received a DUI citation in Washington state between 1989 through 2011, had a traffic case in Washington filed or resolved in a district or municipal court between 2011 and 2012, or had a superior court criminal case in Washington state that was filed against them or resolved between 2011 and 2012.

Keeling acknowledged that confidential information should have been kept in a different area, "and now they are."

"I can say nothing more than it was an oversight on our part," he said.

Keeling said officials have added a number of additional security measures, including isolating anything that could be sensitive into more protected areas, implementing code to prevent hackers from getting to other parts of a server, and new encryption rules.

Ferrell said no one from the Administrative Office of the Courts or any court in Washington state will be asking for personal information over the phone or via email related to the breach.

State officials have set up a website and hotline to answer public questions about the break: http://www.courts.wa.gov/databreach and 1-800-448-5584.

Michael Cockrill, the state's chief information officer, said security experts have determined there were no breaches at state agencies, which are on a separate network.

"Cybersecurity and cyberterrorism attacks continue to rise in number and sophistication every year, affecting the private and public sector, and countless individuals," Cockrill said in a written statement. "The AOC data breach is a sobering reminder for every branch and every level of government that protection of personal and confidential data entrusted to government is a paramount responsibility."

Cockrill said Gov. Jay Inslee has directed his office and Consolidated Technology Services in the executive branch to assist the Office of the Courts to enhance the security of its judicial data.

Washington state Court Administrator Callie Dietz said that if any of the 94 people who are contacted by the court request credit monitoring, "we certainly will provide whatever we can do for them."

PFT: Roc Nation makes pitch to represent Smith

TebowGetty Images

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan was fascinated by the fascination with Tim Tebow.? Khan will need to find an even more dramatic term to describe his reaction to the new fan-based push against bringing Tebow to his hometown football team.

In response to recent efforts from White House petitioners and a publicity-seeking lawyer (yes, the firm actually asked us to run a link to its website in our story about the attorney?s pro-Tebow ad), a group of Jaguars fans have launched an effort to support the team?s decision to pass on a quarterback who can?t pass very well.

More than 528,000 clicks of supposed support have been registered at EvenIfHesReleased.com, a domain name based on G.M. Dave Caldwell?s door-slamming remarks about the prospect of signing Tebow.? Those comments came at a time when ESPN had reported it was a ?virtual certainty? Tebow would play for the Jaguars in 2013.

?We are inspired to counter anything or anyone that chooses to attack or spread ignorance about our fan base,? John Caputo, president of Bold City Brigade, told Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.? ?We aim to do it in a tasteful and tactful manner, which represents our mission and members.?

At the risk of becoming a target of this attack, there?s a problem with the website.? In order to see the current number of clicks supporting the team for not wanting Tebow, the visitor has to click the ?I Support This Message? link on the front page of the site.? And the site allows multiple votes from the same computer browser, simply by refreshing the page after voting.

As a result, two of the clicks (actually, now three) have come from me.

While it?s hardly a scientific exercise, the sentiment meshes with the explanation provided by Mike Dempsey of 1010XL in Jacksonville on Wednesday?s PFT Live.? Dempsey explained that the Tebow push comes from casual fans or non-Jaguars fans who are smitten with the Tebow narrative, and that zealous Jaguars fans generally don?t want him.

?Obviously it?s frustrating to be constantly bombarded by the Tebowmania,? Caputo told Kuharsky.? ?Many die-hard Jaguars fans feel ignored.? We feel like our voices are not heard because we tend to sit back and not do anything brash and in-your-face.

?The media knows what sells. If a petition started by a random guy in New Jersey that isn?t even a Jaguars fan can get that much attention, then obviously we are fighting an uphill battle.? The website is our way of saying to the national media: ?You want something brash.? Well then, here.??

Still, the story has been a story because the Jaguars wanted Tebow last year, when he was traded by the Broncos and picked the Jets over the Jaguars.? That failed effort to get Tebow necessarily made his possible return home a story in 2013.? Now that Tebow is available barely a year after the Jaguars wanted him, it?s understandable for some fans to want him this year.

Especially when the current options at quarterback aren?t all that fascinating.

Fundamentally, that?s the problem.? The Jaguars have given the national media nothing to talk about in recent years.? So when one of the most talked-about players in football hails from Jacksonville and when the Jaguars actually wanted to acquire him a year ago and when the franchise is in the midst of a full-blown turnaround after a 2-14, the Tebow story is the only story that sells.

Indeed, the story about the flawed anti-Tebow website is a story only because it relates to Tebow.

S&P 500 ends down, breaks string of record closes

By Caroline Valetkevitch

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 broke a five-day string of record closing highs on Thursday, ending a fairly volatile session lower as recent momentum lost steam and Apple shares declined.

The Dow also broke its two-day string of all-time closing highs, but still ended above 15,000.

The length of the recent rally has surprised many investors. Analysts said it's difficult for the upward momentum to continue without further catalysts, such as first-quarter earnings reports, which are nearing an end.

Volume has been weak for much of this year's rally. In fact, volume has been below average all week.

"This market is so stretched to the upside that if we get some little wiggle somewhere, I can easily see us getting back down to 1,580" on the S&P 500, said Stephen Massocca, managing director of Wedbush Equity Management LLC in San Francisco.

Apple , down 0.9 percent at $456.77, led the declines of both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, while International Business Machines , down 0.8 percent at $203.24, was the biggest drag on the Dow.

The day's economic data was mostly positive, but failed to give much of a boost to stocks. The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week to the lowest level in almost 5-1/2 years - contrary to economists' forecast of a gain - U.S. Labor Department data showed.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 22.50 points, or 0.15 percent, to end at 15,082.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index declined 6.02 points, or 0.37 percent, to finish at 1,626.67. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 4.10 points, or 0.12 percent, to close at 3,409.17.

Despite the declines for the day, both the Dow and the S&P 500 reached all-time intraday highs - with the Dow touching 15,144.83 and the S&P 500 reaching 1,635.01.

The market, which had been down slightly from the opening bell through midday, reversed course and began to edge higher in early afternoon. Stocks lost steam later in the session.

Limiting losses on the S&P 500, News Corp shares gained 4.5 percent to $33.29. It reported earnings late Wednesday that beat expectations while revenue rose 14 percent. Rupert Murdoch's media company also said it was on track to split off its slow-growing publishing business by the end of June.

Among other top advancers, Tesla Motors Inc surged 24.4 percent to $69.40 a day after posting adjusted earnings that were three times what analysts were expecting as the company sold more cars than it had initially forecast.

Shares of Barnes & Noble Inc shot up 24.3 percent to $22.08, after hitting a fresh 52-week high of $22.25. The stock's sharp advance followed a report by web publication TechCrunch that Microsoft Corp was considering an offer to acquire all of Nook Media's digital assets for $1 billion. Microsoft shares slipped 1 percent to $32.66.

Volume was roughly 6.3 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, slightly below the average daily closing volume of about 6.4 billion this year.

Decliners outnumbered advancers on the NYSE by a ratio of nearly 2 to 1 and on the Nasdaq, about three stocks fell for every two that rose.

Securus Payments: Young, Aggressive, and the Best

?We?re young. We?re aggressive, and we?ve wanted to be the best from the get-go,? this is how Steven Lemma described his company in an interview with the Portland Business Journal. The 28-year-old CEO and Co-Founder of Securus Payments, one of the leading merchant payment processing companies in the country today, prides in his company?s achievements in the past several months. His company is known for being young in the industry but it does not show any signs of being a pushover or a newcomer.

This incredible growth is comparable to very successful startup companies in the U.S. With this achievement, it is not surprising that the company has been recognized as a force to reckon with in its industry. On June 2012, the Portland Business Journal named the company as the number one on its list of 100 Fastest-Growing Private Companies. This prestigious recognition has further established the company?s reputation in the industry. In addition to this, the company?s CEO and Co-Founder, Steven Lemma likewise received a sought-after recognition, the ?40 Under 40? list of the same publication. Lemma was picked as one of the 40 young executives and businessmen who have become successful in their business endeavors. This recognition likewise put the company?s reputation into the driver seat.

Securus Payments has gained popularity over the years because of its reliable services. The company is known for its merchant payment processing services. In particular, the company processes credit and debit card payments for its merchant clients in Oregon and in other parts of the country. Because of its successful growth, the company has been expanding. It was even reported that it opened a new operation for its customer service and assistance arm. The new department is responsible for assisting clients with their questions and concerns regarding the company?s services.

The company is indeed youthful, results-driven, and dynamic. It has proven that with youthful and aggressive spirit, a company could flourish amid the tight competition in the market.

Kwikset introduces Kevo, a smartphone-friendly lock powered by UniKey

Kwikset introduces K?vo, a smartphone friendly lock powered by UniKey

It's not the first time that Kwikset's dabbled in wireless locks, but today the company's introducing K?vo, a smartphone- (and tablet-) friendly lock powered by UniKey. The concept is pretty simple: pair a handset (running a special app) with K?vo via Bluetooth, and simply touch the deadbolt to lock or unlock your door. A keychain fob is also available for those who have not yet joined the smartphone revolution. K?vo only responds to touch when an authorized device or fob is detected nearby. A triple tap lets anyone lock your door, which is useful if a visitor leaves after you. The deadbolt is battery-powered using four AA cells that last more than a year with normal operation. It features a ring of RGB LEDs for feedback and a standard physical key for backup.

Most of the magic is made possible by tech developed by UniKey. The key (natch) to the entire system is the K?vo app which lets you manage eKeys. Once logged into the app, you can send and delete eKeys, or transfer them to another device (this also deletes the eKeys associated with a lost handset, for example) -- you can even create eKeys that only work once. Currently, the app is only available for iOS, which is a major limitation, but it supports push, email and SMS notifications and keeps a detailed log of which eKeys have accessed K?vo and when. Pricing and availability remain a mystery, but all in all the system looks pretty clever. Stay tuned for more details, and check out the link below.

Is there a God? The Vatican invites Mexicans to discuss.

The Vatican's first Courtyard of the Gentiles event outside Europe takes place in Mexico this week. The number of Mexicans who say they are 'non-religious' jumped by 56 percent between 2000 and 2010.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi arrives for an afternoon meeting, at the Vatican, in March. This week, Cardinal Ravasi will host a series of debates on secularism that will bring together believers and nonbelievers ? the Vatican's first 'Courtyard of the Gentiles' event outside Europe.

This week, Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi will host a series of debates on secularism that will bring together believers and nonbelievers ??the Vatican?s first ?Courtyard of the Gentiles? event outside Europe.

Cardinal Ravasi?s visit, and the conversation it?s meant to ignite, comes at a time of spiritual transition in Mexico. The number of non-Catholics in the still predominantly Catholic nation of 112 million has been rising since the 1970s, while the ranks of those who consider themselves expressly non-religious have jumped significantly, by 56 percent, between 2000 and 2010.

More than 10 million Mexicans practice a religion other than Catholicism today; another 5.3 million say they are not part of any religion, according to the national statistics agency, INEGI.

?We warned [organizers] that we suspected the dialogue would be more difficult in Mexico than in Europe,? says Guillermo Hurtado, a professor of philosophy at Mexico?s National Autonomous University, who will participate in the debates. ?In a country like Mexico, there is a great divide that separates believers and nonbelievers. There?s a latent antagonism.?

'The God question'

The Vatican?s ?courtyard? series began under former Pope Benedict XVI, who stepped down in February.?In an increasingly secular world, Mexico included, religion and religious considerations have taken a back seat in public life, and the dialogue aims to counterbalance that. That the series is making its first stop outside of Europe in Latin America is one indication that Pope Francis of Argentina wants to raise the region?s profile in the church, say observers.

In describing the series for a Spanish publication last year, Ravasi wrote, ?Even though they declare themselves atheists, the God question remains present in many men and women.? The ?courtyard? is an opportunity to have a dialogue about faith and reason, he said.

The debates ?aim to go beyond the controversy? of atheism versus religion in Mexico, to talk about pressing social and political themes without one side trying to convince the other, says Mr. Hurtado, a self-described agnostic.

In Mexico those themes will likely include the violence that has battered many regions, as well as the role of religion in culture and society ???an especially touchy topic in a country that has historically taken the separation of church and state to extremes.

Separation of church and state

The Mexican government divorced itself from the Roman Catholic Church in 1862 by banning its participation in political life and establishing secular public education ? a reversal of the church's powerful, central role in Mexico dating to the Spanish conquest. A 1992 law loosened some restrictions on religious institutions, including giving priests and ministers the right to vote, but reiterated others such as a prohibition on owning broadcast media.?

Concerns about the power of the Catholic Church in Mexico still have force here even as the numbers of faithful dwindle, says Eduardo Gonz?les di Pierro, another philosopher ??and self-declared believer ??who will debate the cardinal this week.

Felipe Monroy, who runs the Catholic magazine Vida Nueva, notes ?there has been an immense loss of the faithful? in the country, a trend he chalks up to globalization.

?For us, what?s important is that Mexico is increasingly global, increasingly plural in that all religions can coexist in this country,? Mr. Monroy says. ?This means that surely in the future there will be fewer Catholics and more religious expressions.?

?I don?t think that?s bad,? he adds. ?It requires adapting to new times.?
