Building A Covenant Relationship | vantagepoint.com.sg

Phil is from Northern Ireland. Amin is from Lebanon. PM is from Scotland. Jamie from America, and Andy from England. These men have been my small group members for the past year. ?Phil is my running partner. Amin is a quiet, deep young man I am presently discipling, PM is my musical inspiration. Jamie one of the most outgoing, positive men I know, Andy a gifted teacher and speaker. ?We few, we happy few, we band of brothers? (Shakespeare). ?We few, we happy few, we spiritual friends? (Quintana).

Our aim for the past year has been to encourage and challenge one another to be all that we can be in Christ. We?ve read scripture together and prayed together. We?ve shared frustration and laughter in equal measure. We?ve taken territory and grown into greater Christian maturity together, and we?ve fallen short and fallen on our face together. We?ve served together and we?ve relaxed together. We?ve shared our lives with one another and we have spoken the truth in love (Eph 4:15) correcting one another. I believe covenant and committed relationships together are both a great blessing from the Lord to those who follow after him and unfortunately sorely lacking in the lives of many Christians.

Mutual encouragement and challenge is what spiritual friendship is all about. It happens in one to one relationships and it happens in small groups, both formally and informally, with those very similar to us and those very different from us. It happens because ?It is not good for the man to be alone? (Gen 2:18) and it happens because ?when brothers live together in unity?there the Lord bestows his blessing? (Ps 133). It happens with members of the opposite sex, and (I believe crucially and sadly increasingly seldom in our modern world) it happens with members of the same sex.

The Bible gives us many clear images and strong exhortations regarding our relationships together and what we are called to be. We are described as ?the body of Christ,? ?an army,? ?partners in the Gospel,? ?the family of God,? the list goes on. What we are called to be for one another is both exciting and intimidating.

In John 15:14-16, Jesus tells his Apostles; ?You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master?s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit ? fruit that will last.? The relationship he describes with them is one of affection and care but also one of commitment and responsibility. In a real way, Jesus on his way to his death, is asking his closest friends to bind themselves to him and to the work which he has been about. This maturity and co-operation in recognizing and doing the will of the Father is the key quality that makes the Apostles his friends. It appears as though Jesus has come to rely on them ? they mean something more to him than servants merely doing a master?s bidding ? he recognizes and appreciates their commitment and accompaniment of him as friends.

In contrast to this Christlike notion of friendship, there are many other competing images we are offered today of how friends are made and what they are to be to one another ? images which are often unhelpful in developing Christ-centred friendships. One key illusion we often suffer from is imagining that relationships in Christ or spiritual /covenant friendship should be easy. In fact, they are not easy and often the best relationships are the most difficult and can require a lot of effort. We can also have an idea that the goal of the Christian life is to have a ?best friend,? an intimate spiritual relationship without which life is incomplete. A further pitfall can be the notion that we can only be close with those who are very much like us. Thirty years later, my friend Mike and I still chuckle over a mutual acquaintance who told him ?you know Mike, you?re not really my type,? and then proceeded to serve and share life in Christ very closely with him for many years afterwards. I?ve also seen so many Christians withdraw from relationships in which they had been hurt or let down, convinced that committed relationships were just not worth the pain they sometimes bring. So if these are some wrong notions, what then should characterize Christian relationships of spiritual friendship? Let me share with you my super seven.

Commitment ? I believe that a common commitment to Christ as well as a clear commitment to one another is the only thing that can provide the basis as well as the glue for a long-term, life-giving spiritual friendship. This commitment cannot be expressed merely in words, it must be expressed in action. What are we willing to do for one another? I am reminded of the story in Matthew 9 when the friends of the paralytic lowered him through the ceiling as that was the only way to get him to the place where Jesus was teaching. You see, these friends were willing to do whatever it took to get their needy friend into Jesus? presence. Now that is commitment, and those are the kind of friends I want!

Honesty ? How difficult it is to be truly open and honest with one another. The painful truth is that we want others to think well of us, and if we are not totally honest, that can lead us to hide things from one another or even to mislead those close to us. This lack of transparency and honesty of course is no basis for friendship (Christian or otherwise).

Accountability ? Being honest is essential, but it is really only the beginning. We need to give others permission to speak into our lives. We need to be held accountable by others if we hope to follow through on our nice declarations and plans for growth in Christ. How about giving one another a ?knife,? with which to speak into our lives and help cut away all that does not lead us into the fullness of God?s intention for our lives? My Austrian brother Martin, in addition to being a great ?book suggester? is also willing to speak the truth to me when I need to hear it. Iron sharpens iron, and so one man sharpens another. Blessed is he who is not alone when he falls.

Encouragement ? I once heard you ought to offer someone five words of encouragement for every word of correction (that sounds like a good ratio if you ask me). I vividly recall all the words of encouragement I received as a young Christian from my first mentors. They gave me hope that I could overcome the obstacles I was encountering and that there was a chance that I indeed could become the man of God that he intended me to be, that I could become ?my best self.? Thank you my brothers, thank you dream-inspiring spiritual friends.

Forgiveness and Forbearancev ? The painful truth is that each of us is at best a saved sinner, and a ?work in progress.? We desperately need others to forbear our shortcomings and to forgive our wrongdoings. Horribly enough we often hurt those whom we love most, those with whom we are closest. And somehow, we are humbled by this human reality, that is when this jar of clay, this earthen vessel, can be transformed into Christ?s image and likeness. Like Paul (Rom 7) we often do the very thing we do not wish, and we struggle to find it within ourselves to say those difficult words, ?I am sorry.? We need to become ?offerers? and ?receivers? of forgiveness and forbearance if we are to be true spiritual friends.

Accompaniment ? True spiritual friends know how to ?be there? for one another. They have learned to accompany each other in good times and in bad times, and to ?carry each other?s burdens? (Gal 6:2). They have learned how to make room for others and practice true Christian hospitality. The sign on their door always says ?vacancy? (there is room for you here) and the mat at their door always says ?welcome? (not, ?go away!?). All of us are in keen need of ?cymbrogi? ? companions of the heart ? with whom to join our lives and with whom to labor side by side for the faith of the Gospel. As my friend Pete Greig of 24-7 Prayer puts it ? we ?choose to be friends traveling together and dreaming along the way.?

Love ? ?And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity? (Col 3:14). Spiritual friendship at its core is all about love, sacrificial servant love. Sure it is a challenge. Sure it requires effort. Sure it requires placing God and others before ourselves, but the unity and intimacy to which the Lord calls us is a deep entering into the unity and intimacy of the Triune God himself.

How to intake a proper nutrition for muscle ... - Health and Fitness Tips

I?ve read several times from different sources that women can build about one pound of muscle per months on average when pushing hard for it. In four months, I?ve put on nearly six pounds of muscle (as determined by two types of body-fat analysis done at my gym), so I?m slightly above average as far as adding muscle mass. Here?s what I?ve done nutritionally to make it happen:

?Eat more carbs early in the day, before 2 pm or so. Without plenty of carbs, you won?t have good fuel for a great workout. Carbs fuel the workout. Without plenty of carbs, your workout will be weaker, and your muscles will progress more slowly.

?Eat more proteins later in the day. Also, eat more proteins the day after you lift weights. (Assuming you follow a normal, healthy pattern of about 3x weight-lifting a week, with days in between for recovery.) Proteins build and repair muscle, you need plenty AFTER you work out.

?I try to keep my overall balance of calories as follows: 40% of calories from protein, 40% from carbs, and 20% from fat. Of course, this is the ideal, and I?m not always right on target, but I do make sure that protein % never drops below 30 and fat % never goes above 30. ?Most important is not a nutrition thing, but it is important for building muscle: SLEEP. Get a solid 8 hours at least every night. Also, I?ve read a lot of research supporting the idea that allowing yourself to sleep in a few extra hours on weekends or days off can truly help repay sleep you lost during the work week. You, like I, have probably experienced this before as well. Getting plenty of rest is crucial to allowing your muscles to mend themselves? it could possibly be even more important than getting enough protein.

Fallon visits 'Mister Romney's Neighborhood'

By Craig Berman, Randee Dawn, NBC News contributors

NBC

Jimmy Fallon took his Tuesday night audience to the land of Make-Believe, as he donned his Mitt Romney outfit and salt-and-pepper hair and invited them to visit "Mister Romney's Neighborhood," a wicked riff on?the classic PBS series "Mister Roger's Neighborhood."

Naturally, in Mitt's neighborhood, there's no soft blue cardigan to change into -- just another dark suit jacket -- and there's Manuel ready to take care of your shoewear. But Fallon-as-Romney had lessons to impart, such as the definition of money. "Do you know what money is?" he asked the camera. "I'm guessing no, because you're watching public television. Therefore you don't have cable. Therefore you're probably poor."

After a brief visit from President Obama (psst: not the real one), Fallon/Romney led audiences to the neighborhood of Make-Believe.?"That's where me and Paul Ryan get most of our facts from," he said, strapping a stuffed dog to the top of the trolley for the journey.

Truly, a joke that never gets old. And what did we learn about the land of Make-Believe? About things that don't really exist in the real world -- like a cat, in a tree house. Or Romney's tax returns.

Meanwhile, the boys at Comedy Central were hot on the trail in another way. Romney's surge in the polls led "The Daily Show's"?Jon Stewart to declare the election all but over, much like it was a lock for Barack Obama a week ago. But that?s nothing compared to how Stephen Colbert feels.

Colbert?s guest on "The Colbert Report" was a delightfully cranky Morrissey, who again put the kibosh on any reunion of The Smiths and seemed to be contemplating renouncing his anti-meat stance to turn Colbert into a plate of bacon. But he saved his biggest rant for the British royal family.

?I think they are arrogant, horrible dictators,? Morrissey said.

Guess that knighthood honor will have to wait.

But Colbert defended the honor of Princess Kate and company. Finally, Morrissey asked: ?Do you have a royal family??

?Yes. It?s called the Romneys,? Colbert said.

With a Romney presidency a certainty, Stewart took a look at how Mitt Romney might do something to eliminate that trillion dollar deficit he calls ?immoral.? The Republican nominee has already said that social security and medicare won?t be changed for senior citizens. Job training is OK. He?ll even add to the Navy by 15 ships a year, including three submarines.

?It may sound fiscally irresponsible, but just seven more submarines and America gets a free sandwich,? Stewart said.

Moreover, all of that would come with the 20 percent?tax cut that Romney has already promised.

"We get to keep all our stuff?-- and pay less for it! This is like those special potato chips that they made with Olestra that had all of the flavor and none of the calories,? Stewart said.

The obvious item that could be used to make those numbers work is a repeal of Obamacare, the sacred cause of many a Republican candidate this election cycle. But Romney said he intends to maintain some of the provisions he likes, like coverage of preexisting conditions and extending the period children can be covered on their parents policy.

Which caused Stewart to ask: ?Are you a wizard? Do you know or have you ever captured a leprechaun? Is there a goose in your house that produces eggs that are unusually heavy? Because if not, you?re lying!?

And he?s still looking for more specificity, saying ?Dude couldn?t be more vague if he were an HBO season finale!?

Though even Democratic fans of ?The Sopranos? would give the award to HBO in that category.

Of course, Steven Colbert is happier with current events. ?He is on a rocket ride to plausible!? Colbert gushed about Romney?s recent surge. But he?s not taking anything for granted either.

President Obama warned at a recent event that ?we?re only going to do it if everyone is almost obsessive for the next 29 days.? Colbert chastened his fans for their passivity.

?That?s right Obama supporters. Right now you?re only logged on to his website, Facebook page, Twitter feed, YouTube channel, mobile app, Pintrest board, Tumblr, Flicker, Spotify, Storify and Instagram. He needs you to commit!?

PA Cyber Charter School Launches Online School Library ? Virtual ...

MIDLAND, Pa., Oct. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ??The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School has created an online school library, possibly the first K-12 cyber charter school in the nation to do so.

?PA Cyber has always been an innovator. This is a great accomplishment for our staff, and promises to grow into an important educational resource for our students, their parents, our staff and faculty,? said Dr. Michael J. Conti, CEO.

Dr. Conti said the online library has print books that users may borrow by mail, as well as downloadable ebooks and a license agreement allowing users to access a large searchable reference database used by public and college libraries.

Diane Donatella staffs the library as part of her duties in the Student Achievement Department. ?Any PA Cyber student, parent, staff or faculty member can access our school library by logging in with their school username and password,? said Donatella.

Mark Narad is the research and development specialist who designed the PA Cyber Library website. His research found no other cyber charter school with its own online library.

Opened on the first day of classes Sept. 4, the PA Cyber School Library website logged 1,833 visitors in its first week, Narad said.

?The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? was the most requested ebook the first week with 110 copies downloaded, followed by ?Dracula? (108), ?The Jungle Book? (98), ?The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? (70), and ?The Iliad? (70).

Donatella said class reading assignments of classic books will be a major use of the library, but users may request books to read for pleasure in print or digital versions.

The library offers an Academic Resource Center offering help with research papers, compositions, school projects, and the student?s everyday school work. The website has self-help videos, audio books, links to 100 resource websites, a faculty room for resource sharing,?and downloads of important PA Cyber publications including the parent handbook.

Users can tap into EBSCOhost, a multidisciplinary, searchable database providing access to many thousands of reference books, periodicals, newspapers, articles, images and other primary source materials.

Designed specifically for public libraries, this multidisciplinary database provides full text for more than 2,000 general reference publications with full-text information dating as far back as 1922. Covering virtually every subject area of general interest, it contains more than 100,000 primary source documents and 592,000 photos, maps and flags.

The PA Cyber Library website also houses the PA Cyber Resource Center, a self-help website created last year by Mark Narad to answer common how-to questions students and parents may have about technology assistance, curriculum, and navigating Schoology, Blackboard and other education management programs.

PA Cyber is Pennsylvania?s first, largest and most successful K-12 cyber charter school, with an enrollment of 11,000 students and local offices throughout the commonwealth. PA Cyber is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, the nation?s premier accrediting organization. For admissions and information, people may visit the website, www.pacyber.org, or call 1.888.722.9237.

LED Roundup: Redwood Systems, Lumenergi, IKEA, and the GSA ...

The federal government?s a key buyer of energy efficient solid-state lighting, and so are the big box stores.

Swedish housewares giant Ikea made waves last week with its announcement that it will phase out all incandescent and fluorescent lights on its shelves by 2016 to go LED-only. It?s the latest in a series of challenges that major retailers (think Ikea, Home Depot, Lowe?s, Best Buy, etc.) and their lighting technology suppliers (GE, Philips, Osram, etc.) have set for themselves on LEDs, which have been poised to take over the commercial and industrial lighting sectors for years now.

With LED prices falling pretty dramatically, it?s a good bet that big-box stores like Ikea will also be slashing the prices on their consumer LED bulbs, which are still pricey compared to their CFL counterparts. That, in turn, is driving investment across the LED technology chain, from advanced power management and thermal components to integrating LEDs with household dimmer switches and office smart-lighting controls. Customers will want their new $20 (or even $5) LED bulbs to work as promised, after all.

In the meantime, the U.S. government is one of the biggest buyers of LED products in the world as part of its broader, multi-billion-dollar push for energy efficiency. The Department of Energy says solid-state lighting (SSL) could cut the U.S. lighting bill in half, and it is investing tax dollars into R&D and business adoption programs to push it into the mainstream.

The General Services Administration (GSA) manages the country?s federal properties, which makes it a good partner for LED companies. Last week, the GSA gave a nod to lighting control networking startup Lumenergi, announcing it had turned down energy consumption at 11 buildings by a whopping 63 percent.?

That?s a pretty big number, though rival ?smart lighting? companies like Adura, Daintree Networks, Digital Lumens, Enlighted and others say they can also achieve those kinds of savings in buildings that are egregious light-wasters. Simply turning off the lights you used to leave on all night can cut your bill in half, though few buildings are that wasteful. More typical energy savings are in the 20 percent to 30 percent range, out of a lighting budget that?s roughly one-quarter of a building?s total load.

Lumenergi, which raised a $12.7 million Series B round in 2010, also got a nod from the GSA?s Pacific Rim regional administrator, Ruth Cox, who said the platform was useful in identifying where efficiency investment made the most sense. That?s a big new trend in the industry, with startups like FirstFuel and Retroficiency promising hands-off data analytics that can pick out key buildings and classes of real estate to target for the biggest and fastest paybacks. Simple ?burnout? sensors that can direct maintenance workers to faulty lights, while avoiding rote replacement of still-useful bulbs and tubes, can also save a bundle.

In the meantime, once you?ve got a network deployed in your building to manage lights, why not do other things with it? On Monday, Redwood Systems, a startup that networks LEDs and other lighting systems, said that by year?s end it would deliver a ?Room Tracker? tool to manage conference rooms, all running over the same network and control platform that it uses to manage the lights.

Once again, this is a common theme in the smart lighting space. Lights are ubiquitous in buildings, making them great places to locate wireless nodes as well. Those can support all kinds of sensor data collection and control platforms, as well as integrate into master building management systems and the like. Just how all these tools will integrate and partner with building controls giants like Siemens, GE, Schneider Electric, Honeywell, Johnson Controls and the like remains to be seen, of course.

Wireless controls are growing in the industrial realm, with some acquisition activity along the way. Dust Networks, which makes low-power wireless networks using the WirelessHART standard, was acquired by Linear Technology in December.

In the meantime, the residential market remains limited to wealthy early adopters. Google says its Android@Home platform will include IPv6-compatible wireless networking based on the 6LoWPAN standard, though so far it?s only announced one partner, LED maker Lighting Science.

Stanley Black & Decker selling unit for $1.4B - Washington Examiner

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) ? Tool maker Stanley Black & Decker Inc. is selling its hardware and home-improvement business to Spectrum Brands Holdings Inc. for $1.4 billion in cash.

The hardware and home-improvement unit makes locksets, hardware and faucets for residential use and includes brands such as Pfister, Baldwin and Kwikset.

Spectrum Brands, based in Madison, Wis., said that the acquisition will broaden its product offerings which include the Rayovac, Remington and Toastmaster brands.

Stanley Black & Decker, which is based in New Britain Conn., said the sale is part of its ongoing strategy to diversify its revenue and geographic reach. The hardware and home-improvement unit gets 90 percent of its revenue from North America and more than 50 percent of its revenue from U.S. home-improvement stores.

Both companies' boards have approved the transaction.

Spectrum Brands shares climbed $4.76, or 11.6 percent, to $45.91 in midday trading. Stanley Black & Decker shares shed $1.35, or 1.8 percent, to $72.88.

Stanley Black & Decker anticipates the transaction will result in $1.3 billion in proceeds after taxes. It plans to use a majority of the proceeds to buy back shares and a smaller portion to reduce debt. The remaining proceeds, along with offshore capital, will be used to pay for its previously announced acquisition of Infastech, a Hong Kong company that makes fasteners.

Stanley Black & Decker says that the deal with Spectrum is not expected to change its financial outlook for 2012.

Spectrum, which is majority owned by Harbinger Group Inc., says the acquisition of the hardware and home-improvement business should add 75 cents to 80 cents per share in fiscal 2013 and add more than $1 per share in fiscal 2014, excluding one-time transaction and integration costs.

The hardware and home-improvement business will operate as a separate unit once the deal closes, which is expected during Spectrum's first quarter in fiscal 2013.

It will be run by Greg Gluchowski, who currently serves as the unit's president at Stanley Black & Decker. Gluchowski will report to Spectrum CEO David Lumley.

The deal announced Tuesday also includes certain assets of Taiwan's Tong Lung Metal Industry Co., which makes residential and commercial locksets. Stanley Black & Decker purchased Tong Lung over for summer for about $100 million. Spectrum's acquisition of the Tong Lung assets is anticipated to close in the second quarter.
