Probiotics' Effect on Reducing Anxiety | Your Health Journal

newspaperIn a new article from eProbiotics.com, the author discusses how probiotics and probiotic supplments are effective in reducting anxiety. Scientists have recently discovered that the bacteria in our gut somehow communicates with the brain, resulting in the potential cause and/or treatment of certain mental health issues; including using probiotics for treatment of anxiety.

Recent studies have found that supplementing with the probiotics Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium animalis, Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus for four weeks, subjects demonstrated improved processing activity in the area of the brain responsible for controlling emotion, sensation and anxiety.

The article also describes a clear connection between the enteric nervous system, located around the digestive system, and the central nervous system; this finding opens new possibilities to the connection between how probiotics may be effective in treating anxiety. Supplementing with the Lactobacillus strain of probiotics also supports the production of the neurotransmitter GABA, the primary neurotransmitter responsible for controlling behavior and mood.

Probiotic supplements may even reduce the production of stress hormones in the body, thus further reducing risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, digestive issues, depression and anxiety.

Wrestling rules changed to keep sport in Olympics

MOSCOW (AP) ? Wrestling's governing body hopes rule changes designed to make matches more exciting and easier to understand will get the sport back in the Olympics.

The federation, known by the acronym FILA, is also changing its constitution to include a female vice president and will increase the number of women's weight classes if it remains in the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee's executive board recommended in February that wrestling be removed from the 2020 Games.

The move brought about a crisis within FILA, forcing the resignation of president Raphael Martinetti. Nenad Lalovic took over in an interim capacity and undertook modernizing initiatives, and he was elected president at an extraordinary congress meeting in Moscow on Saturday.

"We got out of this congress with decisions needed for our sport to remain in the Olympic family," Lalovic said.

Wrestling is among eight sports vying for the open slot at the 2020 Olympics. The other contenders are sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding, karate, wushu, roller sports and a combined baseball-softball bid.

They will all make their case to an executive board meeting in late May in St. Petersburg, Russia. The final decision will be voted on by all the IOC members in September.

FILA's bureau formulated the rule changes Friday and presented them to the congress a day later. They include changing matches to two three-minute sessions instead of three two-minute periods, with cumulative scoring rather than the previous two-out-of-three system.

"Cumulative score incentivizes the wrestlers to score more often and consistently," FILA vice president Stan Dziedzic said. "In addition, or equally important, the total score is easier for the spectators to understand. It's difficult for a spectator, not to mention the athletes, when one wrestler wins the first period 5-0, loses the next two periods 1-0 and loses the match.

"The common view was that two minutes was not sufficient time to execute the requisite tactics and strategies to provide an exciting match. What's more, it deprives the viewing audience of witnessing the will of the wrestler."

The changes also refine how to penalize wrestlers who try to "game the rules" by passivity. If an official determines a wrestler is being passive, he receives a verbal warning. If there's a second offense, the action will be briefly stopped and the offending wrestler will have to score a point within 30 seconds or his opponent is awarded a point.

Dziedzic said the aim is "to restore the authority of the officials to incentivize the wrestler to take more risk. The onus must be placed on the wrestlers to win the match."

Congress deliberated at length when to implement the chances. Some delegates argued an immediate change would be difficult to adapt to, while others said FILA needs to show it's changing in order to persuade the IOC to keep wrestling in the Olympics.

Dziedzic said FILA would work to have the world championships in September run under the new rules.

Meet Eric Gati of My4HrWorkWeek.com - Blogging Tips

One of my favorite things about the blogging niche is that so many people get started with their own blog to document their process for starting their own business and maybe even leaving their job. This is something that Eric has done with his blog over at My 4 Hour Workweek. The site is loaded up with great content for anyone who is looking to start their own blog or business online, but also goes into detail on Eric?s earnings, his niche sites and many of the other resources and experiences he had in the world of online marketing. Yet another awesome addition in the meet the bloggers interview series.

1.) Please tell us about yourself and how you got into blogging?

Very briefly about me: I?m a 28 year old CPA who lives in Chicago, and I have a little over 4 years of experience working at an accounting firm.? I like what I do, but I?ve always felt that there was more I could be doing outside of work.

For me, blogging was initially inspired by the book ?The 4-Hour Workweek?.? I knew I wanted to create some kind of income outside of my ?9 to 5? job, and I wanted a blog to document my journey.

So, in 2009, My 4-Hour Workweek was born.? Although the blog has grown in popularity over the past few years (now hovering around 25,000-30,000 visits per month, with over 8,000 subscribers between RSS and my Aweber e-mail list), I?m still a regular guy with a regular job.? I mention this not as a point of pride, but more as a partial explanation for why I haven?t achieved the great success that many other bloggers have (who you have interviewed in this series).? As much as I hate to admit it, my job as a CPA still comes first.

In a way, one of my goals is to show people that you can have a very time consuming ?day job? and still make some significant money online.

2.) What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?

The focus of my blog is really about my journey to create sources of online income (preferably passive income).? You could call it an ?internet marketing? blog, but it?s really much more than that ? and I definitely don?t consider myself an internet marketing ?expert? or ?guru?.

I like to think that one day, if/when I ?make it big?, someone else or I will be able to look back at all my posts and clearly see what led me to success, and more importantly, where I failed along the way.? I chose this niche because it allows me to discuss everything that I?m doing online to make money, all in one place.

3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?

Because I don?t sell ad space or use PPC ads like AdSense, my blog traffic is almost exclusively monetized using affiliate links.? My top income source is usually Commission Junction, where I earn affiliate income through hosting services, peer-to-peer lending, and other services/products offered through CJ (that are relevant to my readers).? Because my blog was not intended to be a source of my income online (it?s merely supposed to document my journey), I don?t aggressively try to monetize it.? However, it still happens to be the most lucrative part of my online business.

One of my recent successes was with this page that I was able to rank on page 1 of Google for the highly competitive phrase ?make money online? for the past 6+ months.? The ranking fluctuates quite a bit, as you would imagine ? at one point, I was ranked #2 on page 1, and currently, I?ve fallen to the second page (depending on where you look).? The crazy part is, I had no intention of ranking for that phrase, but nevertheless it turned out to be a great source of my blog?s income.

4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?

The importance of working hard and sticking with it despite slow growth initially.? It?s so easy to give up when you?re first starting out and not seeing results.? I know my first year of blogging was nearly wasted because I didn?t think anyone would ever read my writing.? If I would?ve put a little bit more effort in early on, and started many projects sooner, I probably would be a lot further ahead today.

5.) What are three blogs that you visit almost daily?

1.? Smart Passive Income
2.? Quick Sprout
3.? Niche Pursuits

6.) Can you give us three recommended tools/services that you use with your blogging?

Because I know most bloggers use WordPress, here are 3 plugins that I find helpful:

1.? WordPress SEO by Joost ? This is probably the only SEO plugin most blogger?s need, as it makes just about everything SEO-related easier for you.
2.? Tweet Old Post ? A great way to give some love to your older blog posts automatically ? I use this on a few of my blogs, and it works quite well.
3.? Sharebar ? An attractive way to add sharing buttons (Tweet, ?Like?, etc.) to your blog posts.

7.) What advice would you have for someone who is just starting with their first blog?

1.? Keep pushing forward.? As I mentioned above, it?s so easy to give up when you?re starting out.? Success (except in very rare occasions) doesn?t happen quickly.? And even those who appear to succeed quickly probably had many earlier failures that you just aren?t aware of.

2.? Work hard and be consistent.? This probably applies to many areas of life, but it?s especially true with blogging.? Fight the urge to be lazy ? if you planned to blog three times a week, hold yourself to that schedule.? And as a side note, don?t sacrifice quality just to publish a blog post.? Once you?ve start putting out quality content with a level of consistency, you will find that your audience will return with consistency.

8.) What?s the best advice or tip you?ve discovered about blogging since getting started?

Build relationships ? even though most of your online relationships are virtual, they can have a very real impact on your blog?s success.? You can build relationships by starting small and doing something as simple as leaving a comment on another blog in your niche.

Get to know people, and don?t immediately jump on the opportunity to ask for something.? Strong relationships are built on a two way street, and the best thing you can do is offer value without expecting anything in return.? Don?t worry, good things will come.

9.) If you only had $100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?

I would probably buy hosting, a domain, and good keyword research software (such as Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro).? You won?t know how to use it right away, but there is plenty of free information out there to show you how to use it.

I wouldn?t spend a dime on any eBooks or training courses (with a few exceptions) ? again, there is a wealth of free information on the internet, and if you?re willing to invest your time, you can do most things without spending any money.

10.) How can readers of the blog get in touch with you?

Landing gear issue leads to plane's belly landing

NEWARK, N.J (AP) ? An airline official says a US Airways flight with 34 people aboard was forced to make a belly landing at Newark International Airport after experiencing landing gear trouble. No injuries were reported.

US Airways spokesman Davien Anderson tells The Associated Press that a turboprop plane that left Philadelphia shortly before 11 p.m. Friday landed safely at Newark with its landing gear retracted at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Anderson said the flight, being operated by Piedmont Airlines, was carrying 31 passengers and three crew members. He says the plane circled Newark in a holding pattern while working to get the gear down. After several failed attempts to get the gear down, the plane landed on its belly.

Anderson says the passengers were evacuated to the terminal by bus. He says US Airways is cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident.

College Exam 'Error' Reveals A Thorough Grader, A Kind Fate ...

From a World Wide Web of embarrassing possibilities, this student may have made out just peachy after what one can only hope was an accidental copy-and-paste error wound up on the "Works Cited" page of a final paper.

Instead of linking to a source that explained the Munich Agreement, the reader was directed to a page that sounds like it could be run by a "Jersey Shore"-inspired silk-screening company.

Here's how that worked out:

Pause for a minute, essayists, and look through your browser history this week. This could have been so much worse. Object lesson: Bibliographies are read, too. Make sure that links to Facebook, eBay, Amazon or anything of a more (ahem) "private nature" don't get included.

South Florida Insurance Fraud: Feds Charge 92 Over $20 Million In ...

The vehicle collisions looked like typical South Florida accidents with motorists and passengers reporting they needed treatment from chiropractors and massage therapists.

But investigators said the crashes were carefully staged by willing participants who were trained how to defraud the insurance system to make money for themselves and a highly organized group of medical professionals, clinic owners and recruiters.

Investigators announced charges Thursday against 33 people they said were involved in staging accidents for insurance fraud -- the latest hit in a three-year investigation that identified about $20 million in fraudulently obtained payouts from insurers.

"If you get upset about your car insurance premiums going up, this crime is one of the reasons why," said William J. Maddalena, the assistant special agent in charge of FBI Miami. "Every time an insurance payout is made for a staged accident in Florida, we all feel the pain in the pocketbook."

Operation Sledgehammer, a state and federal investigation, has led to charges being filed against a total of 92 defendants from Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Those already convicted have been ordered to pay more than $5 million in restitution to insurance companies so far, prosecutors said.

The operation got its code name when undercover investigators saw suspects using a sledgehammer to make vehicles look like they'd been in an accident.

The fraud involved a "massive," complicated, highly organized scheme that investigators said included everyone from clinic owners and medical staff who provided fraudulent diagnoses and prescribed fake treatment, to office workers who billed for the services, and recruiters who found accident "victims" and trained them to stage collisions on the streets and highways of South Florida.

The criminal charges filed this week targeted 33 people from West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Weston, Parkland, Davie, Hollywood, Boynton Beach, Greenacres, Doral, Miami and Hialeah with a slew of charges including mail fraud and money-laundering conspiracies, structuring financial transactions and participating in staged-accident fraud.

The scheme dated from about October 2006 to December 2012 and the defendants staged accidents and submitted false insurance claims through 21 chiropractic clinics in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties that they controlled, authorities said.

Of the 33 charged, 26 have been arrested or agreed to surrender, federal and state law enforcement officials said at a Thursday afternoon news conference in the U.S. Attorney's Office in West Palm Beach.

The ringleaders recruited chiropractors Lazaro Rodriguez, 58, of Doral, and Kenneth Karow, 53, of Boynton Beach, and others to serve as the named owners of some of the clinics, investigators said.

Five of the defendants, including alleged ringleaders Vladimir Lopez, 38, and Lazaro Vigoa Mauri, 45, both formerly of West Palm Beach, have fled to Cuba and they and the other defendants who have not yet been caught are considered fugitives, authorities said.

Maddalena said the investigation was kicked off by a tip from a member of the public and urged anyone with information to call their local police department.

The participants in the fraud were trained by recruiters on how to make the accidents look realistic, how to file police reports and insurance claims, how to fake injuries and where to go for treatment, Maddalena said. The ringleaders made sure that insurance checks were deposited into accounts they controlled so they could pay the participants, he said.

Of the 92 people charged to date in the fraud scheme, the U.S. Attorney's Office filed federal charges against 56 of them and the Palm Beach State Attorney's Office filed state charges against 36 of them.

Lawrence Schechtman, 45, a chiropractor from Parkland, Olinda Rodriguez, 39, a massage therapist from West Palm Beach, and Iris Roca, 41, a massage therapist from Davie, were charged separately with participating in staged accident fraud schemes and are expected to surrender in the next few days.

Nine-year-old Mars rover passes 40-year-old record

May 17, 2013 ? While Apollo 17 astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt visited Earth's moon for three days in December 1972, they drove their mission's Lunar Roving Vehicle 19.3 nautical miles (22.210 statute miles or 35.744 kilometers). That was the farthest total distance for any NASA vehicle driving on a world other than Earth until yesterday.

The team operating NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity received confirmation in a transmission from Mars today that the rover drove 263 feet (80 meters) on Thursday, bringing Opportunity's total odometry since landing on Mars in January 2004 to 22.220 statute miles (35.760 kilometers).

Cernan discussed this prospect a few days ago with Opportunity team member Jim Rice of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The Apollo 17 astronaut said, "The record we established with a roving vehicle was made to be broken, and I'm excited and proud to be able to pass the torch to Opportunity."

The international record for driving distance on another world is still held by the Soviet Union's remote-controlled Lunokhod 2 rover, which traveled 23 miles (37 kilometers) on the surface of Earth's moon in 1973.

Opportunity began a multi-week trek this week from an area where it has been working since mid-2011, the "Cape York" segment of the rim of Endeavour Crater, to an area about 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) away, "Solander Point."

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the Mars Exploration Rover Project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. JPL also manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project and its rover, Curiosity, which landed on Mars in August 2012.
