Guy Fieri's Super Bowl Fan Menu (omg!)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Celebrity chef Guy Fieri has given Super Bowl fans the ultimate eating guide ahead of Sunday's big game -- devising an exclusive half-time snack menu for supporters of each team.

Fieri took time out from the Playboy Super Bowl party at the Bud Light Hotel to offer his expert guidance to the hungry hordes desperate for some delicious treats while watching the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants.

The restaurateur, host of the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives," insisted that in order to truly get behind their team, Patriots' fans need to dig into a meal concocted in honor of the region's strong seafood tradition.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - FEBRUARY 03: Chef Guy Fieri attends the 2012 Playboy Party hosted by Bud Light Hotel at Bud??"I would go some lobster roll," Fieri said. "My wife (Lori) is from Providence, RI., so she's got that kind of attitude about it. She knows that kind of food -- whenever we go up there it has something to do with seafood and lobster, so a good lobster roll has to be the way to go."

Fieri is no stranger to the lobster roll, having featured the meal on an episode of his show last year where he visited the Denver seafood eatery, Steuben's. However, the Giants posed more of a challenge for the 44-year-old, due to New York's incredibly varied cuisine. In the end, he went for a trusted old favorite.

"I just flew in from NY, it is kind of the melting pot of melting pots for food," he said. "That's where everyone is doing food, anything ethnic, all-American. I think if you are trying to do something quick and easy for Super Bowl, I would say some really good hot dogs.

"They've got that nice little snap. They've got that really great casing on them. That and maybe some killer pies, some killer pizza. Some nice thin crust, a little bit of cheese cooked the right way, those would be my options."

Fieri hopes that the masses will opt for something a little more creative than the traditional offerings of chips and dip as they prepare for what promises to be a tightly-fought contest at Lucas Oil Stadium. He even came up with an option for the neutral fan with no affiliation to the respective teams of Tom Brady and Eli Manning.

"I go in cycles," he said. "Sometimes I like cooking off a big roast and then slicing it thin and then doing different types like barbequed beef, but this year it is chicken wings, man. I am down with the chicken wings.

"You can cook them, kind of hold them, then fry them hot if you want to or bake them in the oven. Then you can put all different kinds of sauces on them. If you are having a big Super Bowl party like I usually do, you have to be able to feed the masses."

If possible, you may want to consider inexpensive ways to do Jumeirah Islands Home improvement projects ? one of these would be cleaning your house thoroughly. Your house should be cleaned on a regular basis; this is one of the best ways to do an inexpensive Jumeirah Islands Home improvement project. The way that you clean your Jumeirah Islands Home, and how thorough you are, may be based upon your desire to do so. This is why cleaning green is so important. Strip the paint off of your walls and replace it with low or no VOC paint. VOC or Volatile Organic Compounds is the primary concern. The reason this is bad is because the chemicals can vaporize at room temperature making your air unhealthy. And it doesn?t stop there! You indoor pollution will go outside, into the air in your neighborhood, causing it to be less breathable than ever before. Low VOC paint (most paint manufacturers are making it now) reduces that risk. And, as an addendum, you should also be aware that some paint uses additional toxic chemicals when manufactured. Some of the best paints to use include Dutch-Boy, Benjamin Moore and Bioshield Milk Paint to name a few.

Anyone that uses a reusable mop knows the benefits of doing so. A lot of us have switched out our mops for Swiffers (or generic versions of this tool) over the last few years. You can really benefit from using disposable pads. Simply clean your floor, and dispose of the cleaning pad to keep everything sanitary. Problems with this particular method include filling landfills with the used pads and the chemicals that you will be introduced which are used as cleaning agents. The environment can actually benefit by using a reusable mop which will allow you to use it over and over with environmentally friendly floor cleaning solutions.

A lot of people must not realize how the state of their Jumeirah Islands Home and its value can be determined by how clean it is. The price of your Jumeirah Islands Home will go up when your cleaning methods become green or friendly to the environment. To keep your Jumeirah Islands Home from falling apart, you should start keeping it clean with environmentally friendly products.

Circular RNAs more common than previously thought

Thursday, February 2, 2012

In the classical model of gene expression, the genetic script encoded in our genomes is expressed in each cell in the form of RNA molecules, each consisting of a linear string of chemical "bases". It may be time to revise this traditional understanding of human gene expression, as new research suggests that circular RNA molecules, rather than the classical linear molecules, are a widespread feature of the gene expression program in every human cell. The results are published in the Feb. 1 issue of the online journal PLoS ONE.

A group of researchers working with HHMI investigator and biochemistry professor Patrick Brown, of Stanford University, have discovered hundreds of human gene transcripts that appear to have resulted from a non-canonical program that "splices" the RNA molecules into circles. For many genes, these circular RNAs made up a substantial fraction of all the transcripts identified, suggesting that they are far more abundant and perhaps more important than previously thought.

Circular RNAs have heretofore "flown under the radar" because traditional methods for isolating RNA from cells have inadvertently discarded these circular molecules. The exact function of circular RNAs, and potential relevance for human biology or health, if any, remains to be determined, but this study opens up many exciting avenues for further research.

"This research shows that there are still important fundamental biological programs to be discovered by experimental exploration coupled with new statistical and computational approaches," said Julia Salzman, one of the authors of the paper. "These circular RNAs may represent a yet-to-be discovered biological process."

Gluten Free Tomato White Bean Soup With Quinoa at Phoodie.info ...

?This soup is like magic,? were the first words uttered by our flu-struck friend, upon trying our new creation. And yes, he could still taste things! Another housemate/taste-tester, who typically hates tomato-based soups, was blown away by this tasty concoction. This is a marvelously healthy soup, chock full of hearty veggies. The best part about this soup is that it?s colorful! Which has to mean it?s good for you, right? It yeilds a huge amount that will feed you and your sick friends for the whole week, and we know you probably have a few of them right now. So, get cooking, and bring a bowl of this to a friend or loved one tonight. (Recipe from The First Mess).

Ingredients:
1 cup dry beans soaked for at least 2 hours and drained (I used navy beans)
2 tbsp grape seed oil
1 medium onion, diced (I added a small-diced shallot too)
1 rib celery, diced
1 bay leaf
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 sprigs thyme, leaves chopped fine
1 sprig rosemary, leaves chopped fine
1/4 cup tomato paste
2 cups halved grape tomatoes (or regular diced tomatoes or 1 can of diced tomatoes etc)
2 quarts vegetable stock
2 cups diced vegetables (I used zucchini and green beans)
1/2 cup quinoa, soaked (or rice or millet or small pasta etc etc)
1/2 bunch kale, leaves removed and chopped roughly
5 sprigs of parsley, leaves chopped fine
salt and pepper

Directions:

?Heat the oil in a big soup pot over medium. Add the onions and cook until they soften up just a bit, about 5 minutes. I kind of like to stew the onion in the oil for a while so that it gets really soft and blends right in with the soup. Add the celery and bay leaf and cook until the celery softens, another 5 minutes. Add the garlic, thyme and rosemary. Cook until fragrant, 1-2 minutes.

Add the tomato paste and stir continuously until paste is broken up and its flavour is cooked out, about 5-7 minutes. Add the beans and tomatoes and stir to coat in the tomato paste mixture. Add about 1/2 cup of the stock and scrape the bottom of the pot to get any browned bits up. Add the rest of the stock and bring to a boil. Simmer until the beans still have some bite, about 35 minutes.

Add the quinoa and stir. If you?re using rice, add it with the beans. If using pasta, add it after letting the beans cook for about 40 minutes since it doesn?t take as long as quinoa. Add the vegetables and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. If using heartier vegetables like carrots or squash, add them sooner to allow adequate cooking time. When the beans are a little soft (but still have some bite!), add the greens and parsley. Stir until greens are wilted a bit and serve.?

IHC launches 2012 appeal wilth call to parents having difficulty ...

IHC is launching its 2012 Annual Appeal with a call to parents who are having difficulty enrolling a child with a disability at school.

?Let us know if you are having trouble of any kind. We want to help you make sure your child is educated ? and welcome ? at school,? says IHC Director of Advocacy Trish Grant.

When twins Levi and Olivia Jeffery turned five, two Hamilton primary schools refused to enrol Levi, who is blind and has autistic tendencies. It disrupted the education of both children and was stressful for the whole family. In the end Olivia left her school and started with Levi the following year, aged 6, at Woodstock Primary School, in Hamilton.

Trish says despite disabled children having the right to be fully included in their local schools, many schools refuse to enrol disabled children or put limits on their enrolment. ?Parents are often asked to contribute financially to teacher-aide hours, to take their child home early, or keep them at home during a school activity or camp because it?s seen as too hard to include the children.?

In its Annual Appeal, which runs for the month of February, IHC is asking New Zealanders to help us go into bat for children with intellectual disabilities.

Disabled children and young people experience high rates of poverty and family breakdown. Parents often don?t get the right information or support; they don?t know what their entitlements are; they struggle to support their child?s rights. Ten percent of children aged under 15 have a disability; 25 percent of children with a disability live in benefit-dependent homes; 18 percent of children with a disability live in homes where the income is less than $30,000 a year.

To report problems enrolling a child with a disability in school phone 0800 442 442 and press 2.

Please send a donation to IHC, PO Box 1757, Wellington or donate online at www.ihc.org.nz/donate or call 0900 44 900 to make a $20 donation.

BACKGROUNDER
31 January 2012
Our priorities for children

Every day disabled children and young people are missing out at home, at school and in the community. They experience high rates of poverty and family breakdown, and few attend early childhood education. Parents don?t get the right information; they don?t know what their entitlements are.

IHC wants to improve lives for families and in our 2012 Annual Appeal we are asking New Zealanders to support a change for children.

The facts:
? 5% of all children have special education needs.
? 10% of children aged under 15 have a disability.
? 25% of children with a disability live in benefit-dependent homes.
? 28% of children with a disability live in one-parent homes.
? 18% of children with a disability live in homes where the income is less than $30,000 a year.
? Only 25% of disabled children 0-14 are estimated to be getting special education support.

IHC relies on donations for much of the work it does on behalf of children in New Zealand with intellectual disabilities. Many IHC programmes are not government-funded so we need help from the public if we are to carry on our work in communities.

Our work to support children includes:
? Regular advocacy on behalf of families who struggle to get the early support they need. IHC has been running ?Start Strong? seminars throughout New Zealand to improve this early support.
? A commitment to inclusive education for all children. IHC is pursuing a complaint with the Human Rights Commission against Government policies and practices that discriminate against children with intellectual disabilities.
? Commissioning research on inclusive education that made a powerful case for including disabled students in regular classrooms.
? Providing a free book about intellectual disability to every family and their child who request it.
? A special ?We Can Help? campaign to help Christchurch families in the aftermath of the earthquakes.

Widow of Cuban prisoner confirms domestic violence (AP)

HAVANA ? The widow of a Cuban prisoner who reportedly died after a 50-day hunger strike acknowledged Monday that his legal troubles stemmed from a domestic violence incident and that he aligned himself with the opposition only after he was detained for that, but accused the government of negligence leading to his death.

Maritza Pelegrino said her late husband, Wilman Villar, was first arrested after her mother alerted neighbors and police in July 2011 about a marital dispute. Authorities say Villar beat Pelegrino, but she downplayed the seriousness of the incident.

"There was an argument between us like in any marriage," said the 28-year-old Pelegrino, whose husband died Jan. 19, a week after he was hospitalized in the far-eastern city of Santiago.

Pelegrino, who now herself has joined a dissident group, spoke at a news conference in the Havana home of a prominent rights activist and appeared with former political prisoner Jose Daniel Ferrer, head of the Patriotic Union of Cuba opposition group in the island's east.

Dissidents say Villar's death was provoked by complications from pneumonia related to his refusal to eat in protest of his incarceration, while the government maintains that he was not on hunger strike and says authorities gave him all necessary medical attention.

Pelegrino told journalists that during the July arrest, Villar, who apparently had been drinking, was treated roughly by authorities.

"We had our argument and afterward my mother went (to seek help). That's when the police arrived and took him away by force, mistreating him. They put him in the car and took him away," Pelegrino said.

Villar was released while a court considered his case. He first joined up with anti-government activists in August or September, according to Pelegrino and Ferrer.

Villar was taken into custody again in November when a court sentenced him to four years for disrespecting authority, assault and resisting arrest arising from the domestic violence case. Authorities call him a "common criminal."

"After committing his crime, while remaining free during the prosecution, Villar began to link himself to counterrevolutionary elements in Santiago de Cuba who led him to believe that his supposed membership in mercenary groups would help him evade justice," the government said in an official declaration published Jan. 20.

Pelegrino attributed her husband's political activism to anger over his father's death in custody five years earlier, though she could not explain why he joined the movement only last year.

Ferrer said Villar protested his sentence by refusing to eat but intended to continue drinking liquids.

The two said family members visited Villar on Dec. 23 and he lifted his hunger strike, only to stop eating again six days later when he realized his sentence would not be reconsidered. He was hospitalized in mid-January, and his health continued to decline.

The government has said "there is abundant proof and testimony demonstrating that he was not a 'dissident' nor was he on hunger strike," though authorities have not made such evidence public.

Cuba accused the opposition and the U.S. government of using Villar's death to demonize the revolution. It considers dissidents to be mercenaries trying to topple the communist-run government at the bidding of Washington.

Villar, 31, was little-known before his death even among island dissidents.

Human rights watcher Amnesty International determined Villar met its criteria for recognition as a "prisoner of conscience" and had planned to launch a campaign Jan. 20 calling for his release, but he died the previous evening.

Pelegrino was clad in white at the news conference and said she had joined the dissident group known as the Ladies in White while her husband was in jail.
